Gardner Edgerton, Mill Valley, Aquinas win football titles: Kansas + Missouri results
The Gardner Edgerton Trailblazers, Mill Valley Jaguars and St. Thomas Aquinas Saints all claimed state championships in Kansas high school football on Saturday.
The Joel Applebee-coached MVHS Jaguars, champions of Class 5A for the fifth straight year, beat Kapaun Mt. Carmel 62-37 at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan.
Gardner Edgerton beat Derby 22-19 for the Class 6A crown at Emporia State University in Emporia.
And Aquinas beat Andover Central 35-7 for the Class 4A title at Topeka’s Hummer Park.
Missouri: Kearney advances to title game
Also on Saturday, but on the Missouri side of the state line, the Kearney Bulldogs advanced to next weekend’s Show-Me Bowl state final for Class 4 programs with a 42-7 thumping of Jefferson City.
Kearney will play Hillsboro, a 34-12 winner over Lutheran North, for the state championship at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 at Faurot Field in Columbia.
The Class 6 Show-Me Bowl opponent for Liberty North, a winner Friday night at Rockhurst, also became clear Saturday: Christian Brothers College beat De Smet 31-28 in St. Louis, meaning the Eagles will meet CBC for the title at 7 p.m. next Saturday at Faurot Field.
In the Class 3 semifinals, Seneca beat Kansas City’s St. Pius X 41-17 on Saturday.
And in Class 1, North Platte beat Milan 54-34 to reach Friday’s 3 p.m. championship game at Faurot Field. North Platte will be taking on Marionville, a 38-7 semifinal winner against St. Vincent.
