Gameloft has announced a new Dungeons and Dragons action-survival RPG in development for PC and consoles. The new game will be made by Gameloft Montreal, which was responsible for games like Disney Dreamlight Valley and Lego Star Wars Castaways.

The game is a result of a new partnership between Gameloft and Wizards of the Coast, which owns the DnD franchise. The untitled game will feature a host of gameplay mechanics, including co-op built around a mix of survival, life sim, and action RPG mechanics. It will be set in the Forgotten Realms, as is usual for any DnD campaign.

If that sounds overly ambitious for a developer primarily known for mobile games, then yes, you are correct. Before this, Gameloft's only console releases were games in the Dungeon Hunter franchise and multiplatform free-to-play titles like Disney Speedstorm. It's not exactly a studio you'd think of when talking about a big DnD RPG. Regardless, the first look at the game is here via a piece of concept art, which does look intriguing.

“We are honored to partner with Wizards of the Coast to deliver a completely new experience in the Dungeons & Dragons universe,” said Lee Kaburis, Executive Producer at Gameloft Montreal in a press statement. “We are all big fans of D&D and are already hard at work bringing our concept to life, including growing our team, and we look forward to sharing more details in the future.”

"Making friends, both on and off the table, has always been a core Dungeons & Dragons value and it is our goal, as life-long fans, to bring this experience to a different genre renowned for emergent gameplay and shared narrative that can be enjoyed by both newcomers and tabletop masters alike,” said Marc-Andre Deslongchamps, Creative Director at Gameloft Montreal.

Making a DnD game sure sounds hot, especially after Larian Studios' Baldur's Gate 3 took home multiple accolades during the awards season last year. This included five wins at The Game Awards, five Golden Joystick awards, and four at D.I.C.E. BG3 is also nominated for ten awards at the BAFTA Games Awards, so we can see why Wizards of the Coast would be interested in developing a new DnD game.

It looks like DnD fans are going to be feasting for the next few years, with so many announcements coming from the franchise in different mediums. Larian Studios has already started work on its next game, while a sequel to Chris Pine's Dungeons and Dragons movie is looking likely. Heck, even Lego is about to announce a new DnD crossover.

While that's exciting, don't expect this game to be released soon though, as Gameloft is hiring developers for the job right now. Given the growing development cycle of major console games these days, we don't expect to see anything substantial from the game for at least two years.
