Game of Thrones star's new movie bashed by reviews as Rotten Tomatoes score is revealed

Game of Thrones stars Liam Cunningham's new movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter has been sunken by critics, debuting with a less than fresh Rotten Tomatoes score of 38 per cent.

The film stars Cunningham alongside The Fall's Aisling Franciosi, Ant-Man's David Dastmalchia and Corey Hawkins, and is directed by André Øvredal.

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is based on "The Captain's Log" a chapter from 1897 Bram Stoker novel Dracula. The film centers on the doomed crew onboard The Dementor, a merchant ship on a voyage from Transylvania to London.

Unbeknownst to them, the ship has a stowaway, the infamous vampire Dracula, whose menacing presence stalks them after night falls.

But according to critics, this Dracula (played by Javier Botet) sadly lacks bite. Kristen Lopez of The Wrap wrote: "There’s just nothing about this interpretation of the character that makes him stand out as Count… Dracula versus just another standard vampire."

Critic Neil Minow points out that the film's title gives away the ending, adding: "That is a good thing if what you are looking for is seeing the ship's crew picked off one by one, signaled with ominous music. Otherwise, skip it."

Deadline's Valerie Complex writes: "Another backdoor pilot to upstart a Cinematic Monster Universe that may never come to fruition, while Kristy Puchko of Mashable adds: "I admire the ambition...yet, I was unable to enjoy the ride for what it was, too caught up in where it might have gone."

However it's not all bad, as Meagan Navarro from Bloody Disgusting gave it a fresh rating, writing: "Rich world-building, impressive scale, a commitment to practical effects, and fully realized characters ground the increasingly claustrophobic, grim tale set at sea."

The Last Voyage of the Demeter is released in cinemas in the US on August 11, with a UK release date to be confirmed.
