Gabbie Marshall, a 2019 graduate of Mount Notre Dame High School, will play in a second consecutive national championship game for Iowa, after helping the Hawkeyes hold off UConn on Friday night to advance to Sunday's title game against South Carolina.

Marshall made another impressive, late-game defensive play at the end of the win against UConn, as she's been known to do at Iowa. As she tried to fight through a screen from UConn's Aaliyah Edwards with 3.9 seconds remaining and the Huskies trailing by one point, Edwards was called for an offensive foul.

Marshall and the Hawkeyes lost to the LSU Tigers in last year's title game in Dallas. Iowa reached last year's championship game, its first in school history, by defeating the Gamecocks, 77-73, in the Final Four. Marshall started and played 39 minutes in that win.

What to know about the 5-foot-9 Marshall, who is known for her outstanding defense:

Marshall has played five seasons for Iowa, and started four of them.

This season, Marshall averaged 6.1 points, 1.1 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 steals in 29.5 minutes per game in 36 games.

Only star Caitlin Clark played more minutes per game than Marshall for the Hawkeyes.

A national title will be at stake in the final game of Marshall's collegiate career.

Clark and Iowa teammates Kate Martin, Molly Davis and Sharon Goodman also will be playing for the final time for Iowa on Sunday.

"I think being in this moment before, I think, gives our group a good understanding of what to expect," Clark told reporters after the win against UConn. "You know, we know what South Carolina brings to the table. We know we're gonna have our hands full. The way that they played tonight was incredible. But, you know, it's the national championship. It's the last game of my career. It's the last game for five people on this team. So I don't think motivation will be hard to come by."

Clark shared praise of Marshall after Iowa's win against UConn.

"Gabbie Marshall just comes up with big defensive plays all the time," Clark told reporters. "Like you see it time and time again for us. And she doesn't get enough credit for what she does. She guards one of the best players in the country and really, you know, challenges her quite a bit. You know, (UConn's) Paige (Bueckers) had a great game. I thought Gabbie just played great defense on her, even when Paige made some tough baskets. Gabbie just responded and kept going out there and guarding her. So I'm really proud of her, and you know, I'm proud of our group for just being able to flip the page and move on to the next play."

At MND, Marshall helped the Cougars to Div. I state championships in 2017 and 2019.

During Marshall's four seasons under head coach Dr. Scott Rogers, Mount Notre Dame had a 94-15 record with three Girls Greater Catholic League titles and three district championships in addition to the state titles.

Marshall was a four-time first-team all-GGCL selection and the league's player of the year in 2019 as a senior. A four-time all-district and three-time all-Ohio selection, Marshall was a McDonald's All-American nominee.

Gabbie's parents, Ernest and Marne, also played college basketball.

Ernest played four seasons at Bellarmine University in Louisville. Marne played one season at Aquinas College after playing basketball, volleyball and softball at Catholic Central High School (also the Cougars) in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Fox 19's Joe Danneman talked to Ernest before the national semifinal about his basketball bond with his daughter.
