Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga disappoints in box-office tie with The Garfield Movie

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has had a disappointing debut at the box office, with the action filming tying with The Garfield Movie.

The latest instalment in George Miller’s action franchise serves as a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road, with the plot telling the origins of Imperator Furiosa (Anya Taylor-Joy) as she attempts to find her way back home after being captured.

Despite receiving critical acclaim, Variety has reported that the film has taken an estimated $25 million across its opening weekend in the US, tying it with The Garfield Movie. Due to the holiday weekend meaning official figures won't be know until Tuesday, Warner Bros are claiming that Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga has topped the charts, whilst Universal has stated that their own film has taken top spot.

In addition to Taylor-Joy, Miller’s film also stars Chris Hemsworth as the villainous Dr Dementus, but the Thor actor had praise for his co-star, saying that Taylor-Joy provided a unique take on the character following Charlize Theron’s performance in Fury Road.

“She turned up in the mindset and headspace with the enthusiasm and passion to craft something that wasn't a kind of mimic, but was her own take on the character,” he told Digital Spy. “The two characters are in both very different points of their life and very different parts, one is mythologised and one is in the building of it.

“Anya was just incredible. I don't think there are many people on the planet that can tell that amount of story with that amount of depth and nuance with the subtlety and a look. She did an amazing job, made it her own. I really think in a beautiful way, the two performances complement each other so well.”

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Garfield Movie are in cinemas now.
