Fry’s Electronics ‘permanently’ shuts down operations in abrupt announcement

Fry’s Electronics is quickly simmering down its operations.

The chain of electronics stores abruptly announced it’s shutting down all of its locations and closing its business “permanently” in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and “changes in the retail industry.”

While the company said it will begin to wind down operations Wednesday, the Fry’s website has already been vacated and now only features the announcement of the closures.

“The Company is in the process of reaching out to its customers with repairs and consignment vendors to help them understand what this will mean for them and the proposed next steps,” a portion of the announcement reads.

Founded in 1985, Fry’s is based in San Jose, Calif., and had 31 stores across nine states, primarily in the western U.S.

Fourteen of the Fry’s locations were in California, with another 8 in Texas, according to San Francisco news station KRON. Arizona, Georgia, Washington, Oregon and Illinois were among the other states with at least one store.

The company’s sprawling venues sold software and electronics, with staff members also providing technology assistance and repairs.

“It is hoped that undertaking the wind-down through this orderly process will reduce costs, avoid additional liabilities, minimize the impact on our customers, vendors, landlords and associates, and maximize the value of the Company’s assets for its creditors and other stakeholders,” Fry’s wrote.
