An 18-year-old drowned in a Georgia lake after his friends tried to save him, officials said.

He was identifiedas Juantavious Deshaun, from Greensboro, Georgia, after his body was recovered around 1 p.m. July 25, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

On Sunday, July 24, game wardens responded to a call about a possible drowning at the Walker Church Road bridge over Lake Oconee, according to a DNR statement. Witnesses said an 18-year-old man, later identified as Deshaun, jumped from the bridge and began to struggle. Two friends who were with Deshaun attempted to save him, but they had to let him go to avoid being pulled under, authorities said.

Search efforts for Deshaun began immediately Sunday evening. Officials say they used boat mounted sonar, divers and a remote operated vehicle before the search had to be suspended due to bad weather.

The search resumed Monday morning at 8 a.m., and Deshaun’s body was recovered by the early afternoon.
