Friendly cashier keeps Kentucky man from missing out on big Powerball ticket win

An errand and a chance encounter with a friendly cashier at a Kentucky Lottery retailer recently led to a big payout for a man in Georgetown.

The man, who according to the Kentucky Lottery wishes to remain anonymous, won $50,000 after he bought a Powerball ticket at a vape shop on Finley Drive in Georgetown.

The man wasn’t aware he’d won until he visited the store again almost a month later and was approached by an employee there. The employee had sold him the winning ticket.

“You’re the one who won the $50,000 on the Powerball!” the employee told the man, according to a Friday Kentucky Lottery news release.

Caught off guard by the experience, the man immediately left the store and searched his car for the ticket. After he found it, the man went home to tell his family.

“He was supposed to be going to the grocery store but then he came back home and said he wasn’t going,” the man’s wife told the Kentucky Lottery.

The winning numbers in the April 13 drawing were 7, 33, 40, 43, 69 and Powerball 10.

The Scott County man made the trip to Kentucky Lottery headquarters in downtown Louisville May 7 to collect his winnings. After taxes, he left with a check worth $36,000.

The man told the Kentucky Lottery he plans to use the money to pay some bills and tune up his motorcycle, which has been a passion project of his for years.

“It’s just been an ongoing project,” he said. “I’ve needed a few things for a couple years.”

The retailer, located at 98 Finley Drive in Georgetown, will also receive $500 for selling the winning ticket.

The Scott County man isn’t the only recent $50,000 winner in Kentucky in Powerball. According to Kentucky Lottery, three tickets worth that amount were sold for the May 4 drawing.
