Fried chicken and waffles, spaghetti donuts among Fond du Lac craft donut maker’s specialties

FOND DU LAC — Main Street Fond du Lac now has a new feature: donuts.

Just Put it in Your Mouth Craft Donuts started last year with specialty donuts, operating out of The Diner, 175 S. Main St.

Owner Nate Scheer tops the donuts with a variety of options at the customers' request, from reconstructions of classic desserts to unconventional savory combinations.

These include cinnamon roll, "dirt cake," lemon pie and circus cookie donuts, as well as fried chicken and waffles, whiskey-infused bacon and even spaghetti donuts.

He's also used cheesecake or cookie dough as frosting and has made other fruit pie donuts, complete with a lattice crust.

Just Put it in Your Mouth offers craft donuts from the back of The Diner. The circus cookie donut is among a line of flavors like s'mores, cookies and cream and breakfast cereal.

For birthday orders, he has "Your Day, Your Donut," where he'll create one donut for the person whose birthday is being celebrated, based on their favorite flavor profiles.

"The twist is I only make it for that person and I only make it one time, then never again," Scheer said.

Scheer had long been working in kitchens, but the idea for donuts hit him after a low period a few years ago. He started with a case of donuts he'd bought with his wife and made them for family and friends, sharing the results of his creations on social media.

His former employers at The Cellar District then invited him to make donuts for their Easter brunch, and when he shared those donuts on Facebook, he'd titled the post "This Chapter is called redemption."

While that was the beginning, the idea didn't fully take off until months later because he didn't know where to start, until finally he coordinated with his wife to quit his job at the time and give himself 30 days to prove his donut idea could stand on its own.

Not long later, he met Sandy Ritchie, owner of The Diner.

"Sandy's the embodiment of this whole thing," Scheer said. "She opened her back kitchen to me, and I'm extremely grateful."

He got the LLC for his business last fall, and now, with The Diner's kitchen and donut bases he buys from The Cellar District, Scheer can offer donuts for any occasion.

What to expect in 2024: 2024 in Fond du Lac will continue construction, other projects to enhance the area's vitality. Here's what to watch for.

"All the donuts are made to order because I believe in the experience of eating something that makes you feel joy, and part of that experience is getting time to chat about your day, because at the end of the day we all just want to feel seen," he said. "I can offer that experience through donuts."

Bringing joy is even implemented into the name, which Scheer created because it makes him laugh.

Customers can order via the Just Put It In Your Mouth Craft Donuts Facebook page, by calling 920-948-1748 or by visiting Scheer at The Diner.
