Friday basketball results: Winland hits game winner for John Glenn; TV, Maysville roll

It was another busy Friday night in the Muskingum Valley, and here's the results and top performers from around the area:

Boys Basketball

John Glenn 53, Sheridan 52: Stehl Bates found Noah Winland for the game-winning layup with four seconds left, as the Muskies overcame a 15-point halftime deficit to pick up a Muskingum Valley League Big School Division win.

Raine Rodich's 3-point attempt at the horn was off the mark for the Generals. Rodich, a senior lefty guard, finished with a game-high 25 points.

Bates shined after halftime, scoring 14 of his team-high 18 points. Seven came in a 22-point third quarter for the Muskies, who trailed 31-16 at the half.

Caleb Larrick had eight points and Cooper Briggs and C.J. Dolan seven for John Glenn.

Evan Anderson added eight points and Logan Russell seven for Sheridan, which had only three players score in the second half.

West M 64, Morgan 51: Tavin Bennett scored 17 of his 19 points in the second half for the Tornadoes, who pulled away for an MVL-Small School win at Gary Ankrum Gymnasium.

Bennett hit a pair of 3s in the third quarter and two more in the fourth, as West outscored the Raiders, 20-12, in the third quarter to break open a 26-all tie at the half.

Carter Smith scored 16 of his team-high 20 points in the first three quarters and Conner Hill chipped in 14 for West, which had six players score.

Tavian Myers' career-high 25 points, which included a 7-of-8 showing at the line in the first half, paced Morgan. He also had eight in the fourth quarter, but the Raiders never got closer than seven.

Carson Mummey scored all 15 of his points in the first three quarters for Morgan, but only five Raiders scoerd.

Tri-Valley 76, Philo 41: Noah Nichols tallied 17 points and Terrell Darden 14 in a balanced effort for the Scotties, who saw 10 players score in an MVL-Big School win in Dresden.

Nichols was 6-of-7 at the line among his 11 first-half points, and Max Lyall tossed in nine as Tri-Valley opened up a 43-21 halftime lead. It led 65-35 entering the fourth.

Lyall, Brady Kaufman and Erik Neal had nine points and Keaton Hahn tossed in seven for the Scotties. Tri-Valley shot 49 percent from the floor, forced 26 turnovers and held a 37-27 edge in rebounding.

Talon Preston and Rusty Trout had 11 points for Philo (1-2), which hit only 16 of 52 field goals (31 percent) and 5 of 13 free throws (39 percent).

Maysville 81, River View 33: Alex Bobb fired in 32 points to pace the host Panthers, who hit 13 3-pointers in a dominant effort in an MVL-Big School win in Newton Township.

Bobb scored 13 points in the first quarter and Jordyn Watson had 12, accounting for all 25 of the Panthers' points in the frame.

Gator Nichols buried two second-quarter 3s and Bobb added nine more as Maysville's 25-8 lead expanded to 47-20 at intermission.

Layton Massie had 10 points in the first three quarters and Parker Andrews added nine markers for River View.

Rosecrans 80, Miller 43: Grady Labishak fired in 29 points and assisted on 10 other baskets for the Bishops, who started fast and didn't look back in a Mid-State League-Cardinal Division rout at Rogge Gymnasium.

Labishak hit seven of the Bishops' 13 3-pointers, all of which came in the first three quarters. Brendan Bernath scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half, helping Rosecrans take a 58-21 halftime lead.

Xander Daniels added 16 points and Tyler Bernett seven for Rosecrans, which finished 32-of-59 from the floor and dominated the glass, 38-18. Labishak added six rebounds and Bernath three assists and three steals.

Sandy Valley 72, Ridgewood 48: Sophomore lefty Jackson Cabot's career-high 22 points wasn't enough for the Generals, who slipped to 0-2 in Inter-Valley Conference play.

Nick Petro tallied a game-high 22 points and Dontae Faiello 20 for the Cardinals, who led 19-10 after a quarter and 31-16 at the half.

Cabot hit all four of his 3-pointers in the third quarter for Ridgewood, but Petro and Faiello combined for 19 points in the frame to extend the lead.

Kole Robinson added 10 points and Logan Ridenbaugh nine for the Generals.

Buckeye Trail 65, Shadyside 58: Charlie Parry had a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds, as the Warriors topped the Tigers in non-league action.

Parry made 10 of 13 from the line for Trail, which led 37-19 at the half but only 44-40 entering the fourth.

Donovan Geiger added 13 points and Travis Dodd had four of his seven points in the fourth to help seal the win for the Warriors.

Crooksville 55, Meadowbrook 44: The Ceramics picked up their first win of the season, but no leaders were available.

Girls Basketball

Northridge 30, Zanesville 22: Jada Seyfried had seven points, as the Lady Devils fell behind 13-6 at the half and couldn't quite rally in a LCL crossover loss.

Union Local 51, Cambridge 14: The Jets cruised past the Bobcats in Buckeye 8 play.

Sports Briefs

Dresden K of C Free Throw Championship: The annual Dresden Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, at the Dresden Fitness Center which is located behind the Scotties Den. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m., and eligible participants are boys and girls, ages 9-14, and participants must be 9 years old by Jan. 1, 2024. The Fr. John Kempf Knights of Columbus Council 10820 sponsors the competition, and there is no charge to participate. For more information, contact Roy McCarty at 740-754-3361.

New Concord Youth Basketball Tournament: The Tip-off at Tank Youth Boys Basketball Tournament will be held in New Concord on Jan. 12-14. School-based teams in 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th grade will be guaranteed three games with awards going to the 1st and 2nd place teams.
