Update: Eight employees treated after underground power plant at Shaver Lake catches fire

At least eight employees at a power plant near Shaver Lake were injured after a fire broke out on Thursday, Fresno County Cal Fire confirmed.

A fire was reported around 12:45 p.m. at a Southern California Edison facility near Shaver Lake, where a circuit breaker underground exploded, Battalion Chief Brandon Markle said.

By 4:30 p.m., Markle said the employees were released after treatment. Smoke inhalation played a role in at least some of the cases.

The fire was contained Thursday, but a Fresno City Fire Department hazardous materials crew was called in to investigate a possible hazmat situation about a mile underground. Late Thursday, Markle said the crew determined the scene was safe, and no hazmat existed.
