French Open LIVE: Latest tennis scores and results today as Novak Djokovic progresses in clinical fashion
Novak Djokovic produced a ruthless performance to dispatch Roberto Carballes Baena as the French Open second round continues amid another day of rain at Roland-Garros.
The tournament will have to play catch-up after a wash out of the entire day’s schedule on the outside courts yesterday, but Djokovic entertained the crowd on a busy day for fans at Court Philippe-Chatrier. Gael Monfils carryies the hopes of the home crowd as the veteran Frenchman takes on the Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the night session, with the winner facing Djokovic in the third round. as the Serbian continues his bid to win a record 25th grand slam title at Roland Garros.
Earlier in the day, Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina cruised through in straight sets as they joined fellow favourite Iga Swiatek in advancing. Swiatek saved match point on her way to defeating a resurgent Naomi Osaka in a thrilling three-set battle. Swiatek, who prevailed in almost three hours, then called out the French Open crowd for making noise during points.
Meanwhile, French Open chiefs have banned alcohol from the stands following an incident involving David Goffin, in which the Belgian player claimed he was spat at during a raucous victory over Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard.

Novak Djokovic breezes into third round as Aryna Sabalenka and Elina Svitolina also progress

Aryna Sabalenka and Novak Djokovic soared into the third round of the French Open on Thursday as tournament organisers stepped up their fight against unruly fans by announcing an alcohol ban in the stands while also dealing with the wet-weather backlog.
Playing under the roof on Court Philippe Chatrier even as Roland Garros officials were scratching their heads over what to do with the schedule after a fifth straight rain-hit day, second seed Sabalenka blew away qualifier Moyuka Uchijima 6-2 6-2.
“That’s the little advantage we get as top players because we play in big stadiums with the roof,” Sabalenka said, “So I knew that no matter what the weather is going to be, I’m going to play my match. That’s really helpful.”

Davidovich Fokina completes his dominance of the second set and draws level at 1-1 in the match. This one could go on for a long time yet.
It’s great viewing.

Davidovich Fokina is flying now, he leads 4-1 in the second set and has properly upset Ruud’s flow. It’s an incredible performance so far and thoroughly deserved.

Has that tie break loss put a dent in Davidovich Fokina’s momentum? Casper Ruud creates a couple of chances to break from the opening game of the second set but the Spaniard manages to save two break points.
He holds serve.
Then breaks! Where did that come from? Ruud starts his first service game with a double fault and Davidovich Fokina takes advantage.
He breaks for the first time in the match and moves 2-0 up in the second set.

Ruud takes it!
It’s a spectacular shot. At 6-5 up in the tie break he serves wide to Davidovich Fokina’s backhand. The Spaniard gets the return back into play but Ruud whips a one-handed forehand across the court with such pace at his opponent can’t get there.
He wins the tie break 7-5 and claims the opening set.

Tie break time!
Wonderful stuff from Davidovich Fokina who may fancy his chances in this tie break especially with such a strong serve backing him. Casper Ruud has been challenging his serve more but there’s little to separate the two men.
Who’ll win the first set?
French Open LIVE
18:54 , Mike Jones
Ruud moves 5-4 up in the set and could clinch it with a break here. The Norwegian has yet to earn a break point against Davidovich Fokina though and the Spaniard looks unlikely to give one up.
He breezes to a 40-0 lead with the serve and draws back level in the set when Ruud drills a cross court backhand out of play.

Ruud can’t break. To be fair, he’s not given the chance as from deuce Davidovich Fokina is pinpoint perfect with his serve and rattles off the two points needed to win.
He’s level in the set at 4-4. It’s got a tie breaker written all over it this one.

Davidovich Fokina had won 13 points out of 13 when he landed his first serve but a defensive return and drawn out rally means Rudd puts an end to that stat and draws level at 30-30 in the first set’s eighth game.
This is the one. An ace comes down next but Ruud whips a forehand down the line to force deuce. If Ruud can clinch a break here he’ll be serving to win the set.

So far, so tense in Ruud vs Davidovich Fokina. No breaks of serve and Ruud has barely made an impact when going against the serve.
After going 0-15 ahead Ruud looks to flick a forehand slice over the net but clips the tape and watches the ball bounce back onto his own side of the court.

Rune takes the first set! After a back spinning drop shot gifts him two set points the Dane only needs one more rally to get the job done.
He peppers Cobolli’s backhand with a series of down the line forehands and the Italian breaks patience first. He switches to go across court but smokes his shot oo long and the set goes to Rune.

There’s a stubborn quality to Cobolli but he’s not quite been up to the task against Rune’s serve. The Dane is rattling through his own service games and needs just one more to clinch the opening set.
Cobolli has ramped up the speed of his own serves mind you and seems happy enough at the baseline. A service game hold brings him back to 4-5 in the first set and there’s still a chance he can recover from here.
He’ll need to win the next game though.

There’s nothing at all to split the two women who are 6-6 in the tie break. Keys clips the tape and leaves Sherif with a set point but she can’t take it as Keys blazes a superb winner down the line.
The back-to-the-wall determinism from Sherif is to be admired though, she needs to win this to stay in the match. Keys takes the next point as Sherif sends a lob too long.
It’s the American’s first match point... she gets it! Sherif doesn’t quite get hold of a backhand and finds the net meaning Keys moves into the third round.
She wins 6-0 7-6.

2-2! A couple of fine drop shots brings Sherif back on level terms but she gives away the next point with a slight positional error.
Keys is then pushed behind the baseline and can only loop the ball back over to Sherif who tries to power her way past the American before deciding the drop shot is a better mode of attack.

Keys is unbeaten in tie breaks this year having won all five of the ones she’s been involved in. She gets the first point on the board after Sherif, who was the aggressor in a lengthy rally, overcooks a forehand and pings the ball out of play.

Keys leads 2-1 with Sherif next to serve.

Post match thoughts from Novak Djokovic: “Thank you for the support. There’s so much rain this year at Roland Garros, it’s so great so many came out to support under the roof.
“It was a difficult match against Roberto. He scored a lot of very good and precise shots.
“The last game of the first set I played really well and started to play at the higher level. At the end of the match I was then playing very well. I am very happy with this performance.”

Ruthless and relentless. Novak Djokovic marches on, beating Roberto Carballes Baena in straight sets (6-4, 6-1, 6-2).
A bright start from the Spaniard, but like so many Djokovic opponents over the years, he was worn down into submission. The top seed will face the winner of Gael Monfils and Lorenzo Musetti’s match later in the third round.

French Open: Denis Shapovalov leading on Court 11

A right old ding-dong on Court 11 this evening, with Denis Shapovalov and Frances Tiafoe settling North American scores. Tiafoe got his nose in front in a first set tie break but Shapovalov has taken the next two to leave himself well placed to progress. It’s good to see the lively leftie back somewhere nearer to his best after that knee injury brought a premature curtailment to his 2023.
French Open: Novak Djokovic moving closer to victory

Roberto Carballes Baena is chuntering away, a break down in the third and having to battle for just about every point. He eventually serves out a hold thanks to a rare Novak Djokovic return error, his first hold in six games. His Roland-Garros looks to be coming to an end.

Philippe-Chatrier looks pretty full for Djokovic/Carballes Baena. We’ll see how many are in tonight to watch home hero Gael Monfils grapple with Lorenzo Musetti, with lacklustre attendances a theme of the first few days of this year’s French Open.
Swiatek vs Osaka was an instant classic - so where were all the fans?
French Open: Novak Djokovic doubles advantage
16:15 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Superb strokeplay from Roberto Carballes Baena, walloping the crispest of returns to leave Novak Djokovic rooted on the baseline and save a set point. But his joy is temporary - all a little too easy for Djokovic, who takes it 6-1.
French Open: Madison Keys up and running
16:09 , Harry Latham-Coyle
A strong start from Madison Keys, winner in Strasbourg last week, on Court Suzanne-Lenglen, breaking Egypt’s Mayar Sherif in her first service game. Sherif has been as high as 31 in the world but never gone beyond the second round at a major - she’ll have to be at her best to change that against a player in outstanding form.
French Open: Djokovic turning the screw
15:57 , Harry Latham-Coyle
Novak Djokovic must be so demoralising to play against. Roberto Carballes Baena did so much right in that first set, but one shaky service game at the end and suddenly the Serbian is into his stride. Carballes Baena’s shoulders seem to have dropped a little: 3-0 and counting in the second.
Good news, though, with a hubbub of activity around Court Philippe-Chatrier as the crowds break their cover. It looks like play may be imminent elsewhere.
French Open

There’s still no play on the uncovered courts, with tomorrow’s 9.30am start time (8.30 BST) looking ever more necessary. A thoroughly miserable week for those hoping to soak up the sun clayside.
French Open: Novak Djokovic secures first set

Classic Novak Djokovic. He has a little to-do with a fan in one of the front rows behind the umpire’s chair at the start of Roberto Carballes Baena’s service game, and emerges from the fracas firing. Expert court manipulation leave the Spaniard having to save two break points; his failure to do so means the first set belongs to Djokovic (6-4).
French Open: GAME, SET AND MATCH!
15:34 , Harry Latham-Coyle
It’s all over for David Goffin. Alexander Zverev beats he Belgian in straight sets, that first set tiebreak crucial as he found his confidence and then twin 6-2s taking him home behind a strong serving performance.
French Open: Novak Djokovic and Roberto Carballes Baena level
15:21 , Harry Latham-Coyle
A good energy to this match on Court Philippe-Chatrier so far, with Roberto Cabralles Baena very much at the party and rather enjoying his dance with Djokovic. 3-3 in the first.
Alexander Zverev is three games away from the third round. He has just broken David Goffin with a remarkable block volley that lands on the chalk after Goffin had hurled an attempted passing shot right at the big German. A raised hand of apology from Zverev, who leads 3-2 and has been impenetrable on serve so far.
French Open bans alcohol from stands after spitting incident

The French Open has banned fans from drinking alcohol in the stands after Belgian player David Goffin claimed he was spat on by a spectator and complained of a “football” atmosphere on Tuesday.
Goffin accused French Open crowds of “total disrespect” during his five-set win over home favourite Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and alleged that a fan spat chewing gum at him.
Tournament director Amelie Mauresmo said stadium security would be increased, while umpires have been told to be stricter when they crack down on unruly behaviour in the stands.

Elina Svitolina is through to the third round! A late rally from Diane Parry, but an untimely broken string while launching into a likely winner in the tie break rather scuppered her chances. 6-4, 7-6 (3) and onwards the 15th seed goes to a meeting with either Ana Bogdan or Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

Iga Swiatek’s main rivals for the French Open title eased into the third round a day after the Pole’s epic tussle with Naomi Osaka.
While world number one and defending champion Swiatek had to come from 5-2 down in the third set and save a match point against an inspired Osaka, Aryna Sabalenka and Elena Rybakina enjoyed relatively stress-free passages.
Second seed Sabalenka, who has reached the semi-finals of her last six grand-slam events, dispatched Japanese world number 83 Moyuka Uchijima 6-2 6-2.

French Open: Diane Parry breaks to stay alive

Brilliant from Diane Parry! A roar from the home crowd as the Frenchwoman finds life at the last, punching back Elina Svitolina repeatedly to earn a succession of break points and taking the third of them to square the second set at five games apiece.
Across the complex, the tie break has fallen Alexander Zverev’s way. But judging by that first set, he and David Goffin might be there for a while.
French Open: Off to a tie break
13:59 , Harry Latham-Coyle
A first deuce of the match between David Goffin and Alexander Zverev is swiftly followed by the first break point, but Zverev can’t snatch it. Almost inevitably, we’re bound for a tie break.
French Open
13:46 , Harry Latham-Coyle
It continues to hoon it down in Paris, preventing play on any of the outside courts. It’s going to take a remarkable scheduling effort to get the backlog cleared over the next couple of days, particularly with more rain forecast tomorrow.
That’s of little concern to Elina Svitolina, though —the 15th seed has broken a frustrated Diane Parry in the second set and looks to be accelerating towards the third round.
French Open: More crowd bother
13:39 , Harry Latham-Coyle
A brief pause as David Goffin waits to serve in the eighth game on Suzanne-Lenglen as a couple of fans clamber about all over the place for...some reason. Boos and whistles from the rest of a relatively abundant spectatorship eventually get them to re-take their seats.
Neither player has yet had the faintest whiff of a break.
French Open: Elina Svitolina wins first set
13:26 , Harry Latham-Coyle
A real battling performance from Elina Svitolina over on Philippe-Chatrier so far, with Diane Parry giving her plenty to think about with her attacking array. A 6-4 first set is sealed with an ace, though, by the Ukrainian, four times a quarter-finalist here.
French Open: Can David Goffin test Alexander Zverev?
13:23 , Harry Latham-Coyle
David Goffin showed all of his veteran nous in downing the fast-rising Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in his round one match earlier in the week, the Belgian surviving the big hitter and a hostile Roland Garros crowd to set up this encounter.
It’s all on serve at 2-2 so far.
French Open: The rain is back
13:10 , Jamie Braidwood
The covers are back on the outside courts as Zverev and Goffin warm-up under the Suzanne-Lenglen roof. The Belgian is a former quarter-finalist at the French Open but lost to Dominic Thiem in 2016, while Zverev has reached the semis in each of the last three years.
He suffered a horrific ankle injury in his 2022 semi-final defeat to Rafael Nadal but defeated the 14-time champion in his opening round on Monday. He is one of the favourites for the title after winning in Rome, and his performance against Nadal showed why.
French Open: Game, set and match!
12:57 , Jamie Braidwood
Elena Rybakina joins Aryna Sabalenka in the third ruond, with only 67 minutes required to defeat Arantxa Rus on Suzanne-Lenglen. A 6-3 6-4 win for the fourth seed, who is in the same half of the draw as defending champion Iga Swiatek.
Dimitrov, meanwhile, beats the rain as he wraps up a very impressive win over Marozsan 6-0 6-3 6-4. He could play the entertaining Zizou Bergs next, with the Belgian two sets up against German Maximilian Marterer.
In another Germany vs Belgium battle, Alexander Zverev will now face David Goffin on Suzanne-Lenglen.
French Open: First set for Elena Rybakina
12:25 , Jamie Braidwood
Former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina takes the opening set 6-3 against the Dutch player Arantxa Rus, while Elina Svitolina prepares to take to Court Philippe-Chatrier against French opponent Diane Parry.
Svitolina defeated Karolina Pliskova, the former World No 1, in the opening round and the Ukrainian was supported as a home player in last year’s French Open. Svitolina’s husband Gael Monfils is also in action on Philippe-Chatrier today.
French Open: GAME, SET AND MATCH!
12:12 , Jamie Braidwood
A 6-2 6-2 cruise for Aryna Sabalenka, who advances to the third round in just 62 minutes. Uchijima had won 19 matches in a row across the challenger circuit and qualifying, but Sabalenka is just levels above most of the game when she plays like she did today. It was too good from the two-time Australian Open champion.
“Super happy with the performance today,” Sabalenka says, before praising the atmosphere on Philippe-Chatrier, which is strange because there is barely anyone there. Quite the opposite to Iga Swiatek’s honesty on court yesterday.
“I have so much more belief in my myself, more than I did last year in the grand slams.”
Sabalenka goes off for “steak and Netflix”.
French Open: Sabalenka on the brink
12:05 , Jamie Braidwood
Sabalenka saves four break points and hauls herself back from 0-40 down to move a game away from the third round. The World No 2 now leads 6-1 5-2, and that was a clear demonstration of the improvements she has made to the mental side of her game since winning her first grand slam title in January 2023.
Grigor Dimitrov continues to cruise and now leads Fabian Marozsan 6-0 6-3 on Court 14.
French Open: The covers are off
11:40 , Jamie Braidwood
There are brighter skies overhead as some of the covers come off the outside courts - we could have play resuming very shortly.
Sabalenka, menawhile, takes the second break to win the opening set 6-2 on Philippe-Chatrier. That’s a 29-minute set for the World No 2 and this match could be wrapped up pretty quickly from here.
French Open: Aryna Sabalenka gets opening break
11:35 , Jamie Braidwood
Uchijima is offering a very different game to Sabalenka as she looks to over angles and variety, but the World No 2 gets the opening break to lead 5-2 in the first set.
Sabalenka has not won a title since lifting her second grand slam at the Australian Open, but has been beaten twice in finals by World No 1 Iga Swiatek - in Madrid and Rome.
That puts her as the second favourite in Paris.
French Open: Where are all the fans?
11:25 , Jamie Braidwood
Once again there are so many empty seats for the start of the day’s play on Philippe-Chatrier, where Aryna Sabalenka and Moyuka Uchijima are on serve through the first four games. There’s no play going on outside but Philippe-Chatrier is only a third full, at most.
Swiatek vs Osaka was an instant classic - so where were all the fans?

An early victory for Daniil Medvedev, as Miomir Kecmanovic retires from their second-round match while trailing 6-1 5-0. The Serbian had called the trianer but was unable to continue. Wrapped up by lunchtime? Not too bad at all for Medvedev, who will face either Mariano Navone or Tomas Machac next. Machac would be a great match, with the Czech coming off a victory over Novak Djokovic in Geneva.

Medvedev loves clay today, by the look of his performance against Kecmanovic. He leads the Serbian 6-1 3-0, with Kecmanovic set to receive some treatment at the changeover after calling the trainer.
Hurkacz has hit back against Nakashima to win the second set 6-1, while Yulia Putintseva has edged a tight opening set against former World No 2 Paula Badosa 6-4.

A hold apiece for Medvedev and Kecmanovic to get us started.
We also have a few matches resuming from yesterday, including the match between the eighth seed Hubert Hurkacz and the American Brandon Nakashima. That was suspended late in the first yet yesterday, and Nakashima has come out to win it on a tiebreak, 7-2.
French Open: Daniil Medvedev gets underway on day five
10:06 , Jamie Braidwood
Daniil Medvedev is as close to a hard-court specialist as you can get in the modern game, with the Russian fifth seed very open about the nature of his relationship with clay.
It’s been up and down, to say the least, but Medvedev has already improved upon his performance at last year’s French Open when he was knocked out in the opening round.
This time, Medvedev needed a late-night rally to defeat Dominik Koepfer on Monday and now takes on Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic on Suzanne-Lenglen
French Open: Last night’s action

On Philippe-Chatrer, Jannik Sinner continued to work his way up to grand slam winning form as he saw off the 37-year-old Richard Gasquet in straight sets. Gasquet was playing in front of his home fans for what could have been the final time, but was dismissed by the Australian Open champion 6-4 6-2 6-4.
On Suzanne-Lenglen, another veteran put on a show in former French Open champion Stan Wawrinka, but the 39-year-old went down in four to Pavel Kotov. Wawrinka, who defeated Andy Murray in his opening match, was beaten in 3 hours 50 minutes, in a contest that finished late into the night.
Wawrinka was emotional by the end. Could that have been his last match in Paris?

World No 1 Iga Swiatek calls out French Open crowd after thrilling win over Naomi Osaka
09:34 , Jamie Braidwood
World No 1 and defending French Open champion Iga Swiatek called out fans for making noise during points after surviving an epic three-set battle against fellow four-time grand slam winner Naomi Osaka.
Swiatek saved match point on her way to denying an inspired Osaka her biggest win since returning to the sport, as the 22-year-old fought from behind in the deciding set to win a 7-6 1-6 7-5 thriller.
The match was an instant classic but when speaking to former World No 2 Alex Corretja afterwards in her on-court interview, Swiatek referenced a shot she had missed earlier in the third set when a member of the crowd screamed out as she prepared to hit a drive volley.
Unprompted, Swiatek said: “I am sorry to bring this up. I have huge respect for you guys and I know we are playing for you. This is entertainment and we are also making money because of you.
“But sometimes under a lot of pressure when you scream something during the rally or right before the return, it’s really, really hard to be focused. I usually don’t bring this up because I want to be this kind of player that is in the zone and really focused.
“This is serious for us, we are fighting our whole lives to be better and better. Sometimes it’s hard to accept that. The stakes are big. There is a lot of money to win. The few points may change a lot.
“So please guys, if you can support us between the rallies not during that would be really, really amazing. I hope you are still going to like me because the French crowd might get some players that they don’t like and boo. I love you guys. I love playing here - let’s continue that.”

Osaka looked set to pull off her biggest win in years when she led the world No 1 and defending champion 5-2 in the third set.
But the 26-year-old from Japan will have nightmares about a missed forehand as Swiatek survived a match point to come back from the brink of defeat and win 7-6 (1) 1-6 7-5.
It was a remarkable effort from Osaka, the former world No 1 who only returned to action after maternity leave in January.

French Open: Good morning

Novak Djokovic returns to action as the French Open second round continues after an instant classic between Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka lit up a day of rain at Roland Garros.
The tournament will have to play catch-up after rain washed out the entire day’s schedule on the outside courts yesterday, but Djokovic and Aryna Sabalenkaheadline the action on Court Philippe-Chatrier. The roof guarantees there will be action there, with Gael Monfils carrying the hopes of the home crowd as the veteran Frenchman takes on the Italian Lorenzo Musetti in the night session.
Before then, Djokovic takes on Roberto Carballes Baena as the Serbian continues his bid to win a record 25th grand slam title at Roland Garros, while Alexander Zverev returns to action after defeating 14-time champion Rafael Nadal in his opening match on Monday. Zverev, who is looking like the favourite for the men’s title, faces David Goffin.
Yesterday, the favourite for the women’s title Swiatek saved match point on her way to defeating a resurgent Osaka in a thrilling three-set battle. Swiatek, who prevailed in almost three hours, then called out the French Open crowd for making noise during points, while Carlos Alcaraz was far from his best in seeing off the Dutch qualifier Jesper de Jong.
