Freeze warning issued for some North Texas counties, and thunderstorms will be around

The weather lineup for North Texans starting Friday and continuing for several days is this: thunderstorms, freezing temperatures, sunny, more cold and then more thunderstorms on Monday.

So, it would be wise to get umbrellas and jackets.

Scattered thunderstorms are possible primarily across North Texas on Friday morning, and for Central Texas late Friday morning and in the afternoon. A few storms may contain small to marginally severe hail.

In Tarrant County, there’s a 70 percent of rain on Friday, but the storms are expected to be gone by Friday night.

“The rain will be on-and-off throughout the day,” said meteorologist Hunter Reeves with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth on Friday. “It will be light to moderate rain, but it should be gone by Friday evening.”

Daytime temperatures will be about 51 on Friday, and then North Texans will have a cold Saturday morning.

“It will be pretty cold,” Reeves said in reference to Saturday morning temperatures. “The weekend will be cold and sunny.”

Freeze warning

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth has issued a freeze warning from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday for several counties north and northwest of Tarrant County. Tarrant County is not included in the warning, but it still will be cold.

Sub-freezing temperatures as low as 30 degrees are expected. The counties in the warning are Montague, Cooke, Young, Jack, Wise, Denton, Stephens, Palo Pinto, Parker, Eastland, Erath, Comanche and Mills. Cities under the warning include Bowie, Nocona, Gainesville, Graham, Olney, Jacksboro, Decatur, Bridgeport, Carrollton, Denton, Lewisville, Flower Mound, Breckenridge, Mineral Wells, Weatherford, Briar, Cisco, Eastland, Ranger, Gorman, Stephenville, Dublin, Comanche, De Leon, and Goldthwaite.

Officials at the NWS in Fort Worth said frost and freeze conditions may kill or damage crops and other sensitive vegetation.

Here are safety tips for the freeze warning:

Make sure to bring sensitive plants indoors.

Make sure livestock and outdoor pets have adequate shelter from the cold temperatures.

Any outdoor plumbing should be insulated to avoid freezing.

Automatic sprinkler systems should also be turned off to avoid creating ice patches on nearby roads, driveways and sidewalks.

Temperatures on Saturday should reach 50 degrees during the day.

Cold temperatures will once again greet North Texans on Sunday. Temperatures will be in the lower 30s. The daytime high on Sunday should be about 49.

Monday storms

Thunderstorms will be possible again Monday for portions of North and Central Texas. Severe weather is not expected, according to the NWS in Fort Worth.

There’s a 70 percent chance of rain on Monday.

Monday morning temperatures will be in the lower 40s and the daytime highs will be in the upper 40s.
