Freedom Christian softball-baseball, Cape Fear softball take home conference championships

The Cumberland County area was filled with meaningful and memorable games among spring sports on Friday.

While the United 8 conference held it's softball championships in Lumberton, Segra Stadium hosted four Fayetteville schools in the Jackie Robinson Showcase, and the All American and United 8 began conference tournaments for girls soccer. NCISAA Sandhills conference saw their softball and baseball champions crowned as well.

Here's a roundup of game results from the Friday night games.

E.E. Smith, Seventy-First, Douglas Byrd, and Westover all participated in the third annual Jackie Robinson Showcase. Westover clobbered Douglas Byrd 13-2 after pouring on five runs to open the game.

Chandler Garner was the highlight of the evening throwing 14 strikeouts on a single hit, and capping it off with a stellar performance at the plate collecting three hits, that included a home run, and five RBIs.

SPRING SPORTS POSTSEASON AT ONCE: Playoff schedule, scores: Terry Sanford lacrosse, tennis win NCHSAA openers

Cape Fear softball handled business in the United 8 championship game as they visited Lumberton in a rematch of last year's title matchup to repeat as U8 conference champions after shutting out the Pirates, 1-0.

Allie Dawson, the Colts' hit leader put up a team-high three hits, and scored the game's only run. Olivia Melvin held the Pirates scoreless through seven innings, allowing only three hits and struck out eight batters. Cape Fear softball joins the baseball squad at the top of the U8 as they await their playoff opponents.

In the All American conference soccer tournament, Pine Forest succeed in the first round as the sole Fayetteville team in the conference to get a win in the opening round. Led by goals-per-match leader Kaylen Sykes with three total goals, Pine Forest conquered Westover 7-0, and will host Triton on Tuesday, May 7.

Cape Fear soccer defeated rivals Gray's Creek 5-0, and Jack Britt took care of South View 3-1 to both advance in the U8 conference tourney.

Over in the NCISAA, Freedom Christian added two more championship trophies to the program's list of accolades.

Patriots softball continues its historic 21-0 season, and tacks on a Sandhills Athletic Conference championship to top it off. At the plate, Victoria Bryant and KK Swinson scored the only two runs to take the 2-0 win over Fayetteville Christian. Freedom's Rylan Miller struck out 18 hitters in seven innings pitched, and she only allowed two hits.

Freedom's baseball team was also victorious in completing a championship run in the Sandhills conference tournament as they took down Fayetteville Christian in a 5-3 effort. Eli Corney scored a team-high two runs on the evening, and stole five bases. Wilson Stowers shared the mound with Greyson Stafford as they threw 10 strikeouts collectively.
