The SPCA of Texas aims to vaccinate 250 pets free of charge at an upcoming Dallas event, in order to combat deadly diseases that affect our furry friends.

“We urge community members to take advantage of this no-cost resource to ensure the health and wellness of our community’s pets,” said Karen Froehlich, SPCA of Texas’ president & CEO, in a press release.

Parvovirus and distemper in dogs and panleukopenia in cats, the most prevalent deadly diseases affecting pets, are preventable with vaccination. But an estimated 30% of pet parents do not take their pet to a veterinarian annually for preventative care. To address that, the SPCA wants to make vaccines easily accessible.

On Nov. 6, the SPCA in partnership with nonprofit Petco Love will offer free Canine 1-DAPPv and Feline 1-HCP vaccines to help prevent those illnesses and keep pets healthy. It’s part of Petco Love’s new national vaccination initiative, providing one million free pet vaccines to animal welfare partners including the SPCA of Texas.

“It is heartbreaking when any pet suffers or dies from a disease that could have been prevented. It is further exacerbated when unvaccinated pets come into busy shelter kennels, where these deadly diseases can spread quickly, resulting in multiple deaths, skyrocketing expenses, and hindering saving pet lives,” said Susanne Kogut, Petco Love president. “By creating greater awareness and making this crucial preventative care more accessible to pets not currently receiving these lifesaving vaccines, we can prevent the dangerous spread of disease.”

Rabies vaccines will also be provided by the SPCA in partnership with Dallas County. The state of Texas requires that dogs and cats be vaccinated against rabies by four months of age then given a booster 12 months after the initial vaccination.

The event will be held on Sunday from 8 a.m. to noon at the SPCA of Texas’ Myron K. Martin Spay/Neuter and Veterinary Care Clinic at 2400 Lone Star Dr., Dallas. It’s a walk-in vaccination event for Dallas County area pets that’s first-come, first served. Dogs must be on leashes and cats should be in carriers.
