Free STEM workshop for middle-school girls is April 27

AKRON – The International Soap Box Derby will hold the “Girl’s Racing to STEM” workshop at Derby Downs from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 27.

This free workshop, sponsored by the Women’s Endowment Fund, an Akron Community Foundation fund, is open to girls in grades 5 through 8. Registration is limited to 28 participants.

“This workshop is an ideal opportunity to introduce the basics of STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) in a fun and hands-on experience,” said Scott Taylor, International Soap Box Derby president and chief executive officer.

Taylor said girls can attend STEM presentations by the University of Akron’s College of Engineering, explore Derby Downs in search of historic sites and markers, build and race one-thirteenth scale model Soap Box Derby mini-cars and test drive a regulation full-size Soap Box Derby car down the famous Derby Downstrack.
