Frank Clark says Denver hasn’t done enough to make Chiefs-Broncos a true rivalry

In the Netflix series “Quarterback,” Patrick Mahomes talked about the Chiefs’ challenges of facing AFC West foes.

“Those division games like against the Chargers and those teams, that prepares us for the playoffs,” Mahomes said. “Those are some of the best teams in the league.”

But the Chiefs haven’t faced much of a challenge recently against one AFC West opponent: the Denver Broncos. The Chiefs have won the last 15 meetings between the teams, with the Broncos’ last victory coming in September 2015 before the Royals’ World Series championship.

That’s why former Chiefs defensive end Frank Clark, who signed with the Broncos in the offseason, said the teams actually don’t have a rivalry.

“A rivalry is competitive, true or false?” Clark told reporters. “I’m on the Broncos now, and I’ve been on the other side, and we didn’t call it a rivalry then. I’m with the Broncos now. Until we become competitive enough, we have to beat the team. We have to win our division, we have to do a few things not just about the Chiefs.

“There’s things we have to do here.”

Clark was asked if it’s not a rivalry, what is it?

“A football game,” Clark replied, “between two teams.”

Clark is not trying to rub the Chiefs’ success in the faces of his new teammates. He said the Broncos should embrace the opportunities that come with a new season.

“I’ve been on successful teams and we come in in the summer and we don’t have an identity,” Clark said. “You have to build an identity every year. If you’re living off what you did last year, I’m not coming in here talking to these guys about, ‘Oh man, I’m a Super Bowl champ, a two-time champ.’ I haven’t said that one time to any of these guys.

“I’m coming in and I’m trying to learn. I’m trying to get better going into year nine like I’m going to year one. And I’m just trying to make these guys understand the importance of appreciating this opportunity.”
