Fox News reports on Russian jet flying at ‘twice the speed of light,’ which it does not

“Fox & Friends” broke big fake news Wednesday by reporting a new Russian fighter jet that’s in development could travel at twice the speed of light.

Perhaps just as amazingly, show host Steve Doocy seemed more impressed that the hi-tech Sukhoi Checkmate prototype could be controlled remotely than the apparent fact that Russia’s military may be on the verge of time travel.

“The new aircraft is smaller than other Russian fighter jets but can fly at a speed of twice the speed of light,” reported Jillian Mele. “The new design can also be converted into an un-piloted version.”

According to Space.com, that would mean the Sukhoi Checkmate could travel around the world 15 times in one second.

“Un-piloted!” Doocy exclaimed. “So you... control it by a computer or person running it just like a video game. Unbelievable.”

Mele agreed the jets drone capabilities were more interesting than its ability to leap into hyperspace.

“That’s what boggles my mind — that thought,” she said.

In fairness to the live TV morning crew at “Fox & Friends,” Fox’s online version of the story makes clear that what Mele most likely meant to say was that the impressive single-engine stealth fighter could “fly at a speed of 1.8-2 times the speed of sound.”

The jet, which was introduced at an air show outside Moscow, could be a reality by 2023.

Military site Task & Purpose assured its military-minded readers that it’s highly unlikely Russia’s new fighters can double the speed of light, adding that it’s believed the U.S. Air Force is ahead of its adversaries in the fields of AI and autonomous flight.
