Four injured as old bomb explodes near German train station
An unexpected explosion of a World War II-era bomb near an active train station in Germany left at least four people injured Wednesday, officials said.
Police said the blast near Donnersbergerbruecke station in Munich occurred at a construction site.
“At this time there is no evidence of criminal offenses,” Peter Werthmann of Munich police said, according to CNN.
Authorities blocked off the “danger area” after the blast, Werthmann said.
One of the victims was seriously hurt. Authorities have not publicly gone into detail about the nature of the injuries.
There have been multiple instances in recent years in which undetected bombs that date back to World War II were found or exploded in Germany.
Construction areas are typically reviewed ahead of time for potential explosives, said Joachim Herrmann, the Bavarian Minister of the Interior, according to the Deutsche Presse-Agentur agency.
Authorities will now investigate why the explosive in Wednesday’s blast wasn’t found beforehand, Herrmann said.
Past incidents in which old bombs were discovered in Germany have involved officials removing the explosive or detonating it under a controlled setting.
Multiple trains were evacuated from the scene on Wednesday, and service at the station resumed by the afternoon after being briefly suspended.
The railroads themselves were not damaged.
