Four former South Carolina players find new college homes as fall camp nears

Four former South Carolina football players have landed at new schools.

Offensive lineman Jordan Rhodes — who played four seasons at USC before transferring to Ole Miss for the 2021 campaign — has been added to Arkansas State’s roster, according to the school’s updated media guide.

Defensive back La’Dareyen Craig (Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College) and receivers Ger-Cari Caldwell (North Carolina A&T) and Sam Reynolds (Towson) have also found landing spots after entering the transfer portal.

Rhodes was the Gamecocks’ longest-standing commitment in the 2017 class when he signed with South Carolina in February of that year. He was rated a three-star recruit and the No. 1,163 player in the class, per the 247Sports Composite.

The Georgia native played in 20 games during his career in Columbia, including 10 starts during the 2019 season. Rhodes appeared in just one game at Ole Miss last year.

He’ll join a roster headed by former Tennessee head coach Butch Jones, who’s in his second year at ASU. The Red Wolves finished last season 2-10, good for just their second losing season since 2010. Arkansas State reached a bowl game every year between 2011 and 2019.

Craig was a member of South Carolina’s 2021 class and appeared in two games while redshirting during his only season in Columbia. He was slotted as a three-star recruit and the No. 1,172 player in the class. MGCCC defensive coordinator Brett Shufelt confirmed to The State on Wednesday that Craig had been added to the roster.

Caldwell starred at Northwestern High School in Rock Hill before signing with the Gamecocks in the 2020 class. The brother of NFL receiver Anthony Johnson, he played in seven games over two seasons at South Carolina, though he appeared in just one contest in 2021.

As a recruit, Caldwell was rated the No. 581 player and No. 8 player in South Carolina in the 2020 class.

Reynolds appeared in just one game at South Carolina and did not record any stats. The Alabama product was ranked a three-star recruit and the No. 885 player in the 2021 class.

South Carolina is slated to begin fall camp on Aug. 5, while the season opener is scheduled for Sept. 3 at Williams-Brice Stadium against Georgia State.
