Foundation Showrunner Stepping Down Ahead of Season 3

Foundation is shaking things up ahead of its next chapter.

Series co-creator David S. Goyer is stepping down as showrunner amid clashes over budgets, according to our sister site The Hollywood Reporter. Executive producer Bill Bost will reportedly step up to oversee Season 3 of the Apple TV+ sci-fi series, though Goyer will still contribute scripts to the upcoming episodes.

Foundation initially began production on its third season in 2023, then paused amid last year’s dual Hollywood strikes. Production was set to resume earlier this month, but was then delayed a second time due to “issues with budgeting and physical production,” per our sister site Deadline. Production is now reportedly set to resume on March 6.

Adapted from Isaac Asimov’s influential book series, the Lee Pace-led series chronicles the journeys of four crucial individuals “transcending space and time as they overcome deadly crises, shifting loyalties and complicated relationships that will ultimately determine the fate of humanity,” per the official synopsis.

Season 2 wrapped on a shocking note with the death of a major character, who — according to the novels — was poised to die later in the series. “No character has plot armor,” Goyer told TVLine at the time, acknowledging the furor surrounding such a surprising creative choice. The series was renewed for Season 3 in December, at which time Goyer announced he was “thrilled” to continue chronicling the galactic saga and promised even higher stakes for future episodes.
