Fortuny Debuts First-Ever Upholstered CollectionKris Ellis

Fortuny felt the need for a celebratory challenge after hitting its centennial anniversary in 2022. Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo, born in 1871, was a renaissance man of the avante garde, starting in fine painting, dabbling in theater, and finally landing in the realm of fashion and fabric. He was a genius of invention, developing a method of printing richly colored and textural textiles in a process that is still to this day kept secret. Generations of the same family (about 35 people) are taught the printing processes within the walls of their Venetian workshop, preserving highly skilled techniques and small business ingenuity that has always defined the Fortuny name. Having supplied the interior design world with fabrics for so long, the brand felt it was time to show off its fabrics in a new fashion.

They found their kindred spirit in Grant Trick, a master furniture maker, designer, and upholsterer. After learning upholstery techniques in San Francisco, he returned to his home state of Alabama to set up shop in Birmingham. Starting out solely upholstering pieces himself, he has expanded so exponentially in the past few years that Trick moved to Hickory, North Carolina in search of more artisans skilled in furniture production.

A chance meeting a year and a half ago introduced Grant to the Fortuny team and their energy ignited immediately with their aligned values of detail-oriented craftsmanship and luxury materials. The fabric house knew immediately that Trick was the perfect person to bring their fabrics to life.

The six-piece upholstered collection showcases Fortuny's new Teatro collection, which includes three new fabrics. The luxe patterns look like artwork against Trick’s clean-lined upholstery frames (many of the silhouettes can be found in Trick's classic collection.)

Trick speaks to the partnership with Fortuny, “Take one look at Mariano Fortuny's textiles and you'll see his understanding and appreciation for traditional craftsmanship and design. Fortuny didn't only live in the past, he boldly embraced new technology and innovation as a means to improve quality of life. My formula for upholstery is to honor and build on the traditional materials and methods that define our craft. However, I embrace many modern materials and techniques that allow us to consistently make the finest pieces that will last for generations.”

The collection officially launched on May 16th and is available at Fortuny's showroom in New York City.
