A second Fort Worth hospital has been designated a Level 1 trauma center by the state of Texas, meaning that it can handle the most complex and urgent medical emergencies.

Texas Health Harris Methodist Hospital Fort Worth was designated a Level 1 center, according to a news release from the health system. The hospital’s emergency room, at 1301 Pennsylvania Ave. is one of the busiest in the state.

The standards for Level 1 trauma centers are designated by the Department of State Health Services and verified by the American College of Surgeons. There are 22 in the state.

The hospital is part of the Texas Health Resources network, the large nonprofit hospital system that operates throughout much of North Texas.

“No one wishes to visit a trauma center for themselves or their loved ones but having a Level I Trauma Center at Texas Health Fort Worth means when a traumatic medical event occurs, we stand ready to provide quality clinical care when you need us most,” Barclay Berdan, CEO of Texas Health Resources, said in a statement. “This designation is especially critical for fast-growing counties like Tarrant and those to the west.”

John Peter Smith Hospital, part of the JPS Health Network, is also a Level I Trauma Center.
