Fort LeBoeuf lightweight makes District 10 girls wrestling history; Reynolds rolls in Section 1A boys

SHARON — Abby Falk looks forward to the end of her first formal wrestling season.

The reason is seemingly as old as the sport itself: maintaining weight.

More and more, Fort LeBoeuf's 100-pounder has had to abstain from second helpings and snacking.

"I'm looking forward to eating again," Falk said. "Right now, I'm pretty hungry."

When it comes to food, though, Saturday provided her with ample initiative to remain disciplined.

That's when the lightest Bison made history that will forever resonate throughout northwestern Pennsylvania.

Falk pinned General McLane freshman Ella Clark 2 minutes, 33 seconds into their 100 final of District 10's inaugural girls wrestling tournament at Sharon. That meant she also became the district's first gold medalist in a sport the PIAA sanctioned last summer.

"It's such an honor just to be here as a first-year (wrestler)," Falk said. "I put in a lot of hard work, as everyone else did too. Guess that's why I'm so excited."

Falk, like the district's other 12 tournament victors, automatically qualified for the state's West Region tournament at Canon-McMillan High School in Canonsburg. That March 2 meet will help determine which female wrestlers from this side of the state advance to its intial state meet the following weekend at Hershey's Giant Center.

Falk had help

Falk was hugged and congratulated by LeBoeuf's other wrestlers and coaches after she stepped off the district's medal podium.

Notable in that pack was 2022 graduate Andie Przybycien. The Edinboro University sophomore, who wrestled with the Bison boys during her varsity career, has volunteered to coach Falk and her teammates throughout this season.

Freshman Kiai Miklovic (106) and Ella McGuire (112) were the other Bison who watched compete Saturday.

Przybycien was glad she was involved in the historic meet, even if it wasn't as an actual particpant.

"This sport is just going to explode even more," she said.

Przybycien has enjoyed her coaching experience more than she anticipated. She thanked Shane McChesney for his guidance, even though LeBoeuf's head wrestling coach wasn't there.

Ryhal ready for tiebreaker

Hickory demonstrated it could be the district's first girls wrestling power. The Hornets, with entrants in each of the tournament's 13 weight classes, had four individual titlists and finished first (136 points) in the team standings.

Saegertown was second with 90.

Hickory senior Avry Ryhal showed why she was ranked second in the state's latest 155 poll. The Lock Haven University recruit improved to 20-1 with her 1:24 pin of Erie High's Davaya Truman.

While Ryhal long ago adapted to competing before packed stands like those throughout Saturday's sessions, she was aware many of her younger teammates.

That issue was brought up before Friday's early-round matches at Sharon.

"I just told them not to look at the crowds," Ryhal said. "As long as you deal with what you have to do, that's all that matters."

Ryhal is likely to cross paths with the 155 wrestler who's currently ranked ahead of her on the Asics and Gear2Compete state poll.

North Allegheny senior Leyna Rumpler was 26-1 overall going into this weekend. The lone loss for the Baldwin Wallace University recruit was courtesy of Ryhal, who pinned her in 46 seconds last Dec. 9.

Rumpler, though, also is responsible for Ryhal's lone loss. The star of the Tigers won 4-2 in their Jan. 13 rematch.

"I know I need to put in the work (to beat her)," Ryhal said, "because I've seen her put in the work. Whenever we meet again, I know it's going to be a great match."

Reynolds rolls in boys action

The matches for Saturday's girls tournament were woven amid the two-day Section 2A boys tournament.

The Reynolds Raiders reamained the team titlists for that portion of the competition. They piled up 222 points to Commodore Perry's 157½.

Louie Gill was one of the Raiders' five individual titlists. The North Carolina State recruit, who split his four section championships between Hickory and Reynolds, won the last of them with a 3:38 fall of Franklin's Cael Dailey.
