Derek Mason’s tenure as the head coach of the Vanderbilt Commodores came to an end this past November. It was a tough pill to swallow at the time, but he has already found a new job in the Southeastern Conference.

According to Matt Zenitz of AL.com, the Auburn Tigers are hiring Mason as their defensive coordinator. The deal is expected to be finalized in the near future.

Zenitz is reporting that multiple schools, which includes South Carolina, were trying to get Mason as their defensive coordinator.

This is the first real splash made by Bryan Harsin, who was recently named Auburn’s head coach. Having an experienced coach like Mason by his side should help him get through his first year in the SEC.

Mason’s time at Vanderbilt wasn’t very successful, as he owned a 27-55 record. Back when he was at Stanford, though, he was considered one of the best defensive coordinators in college football.

Not only could this be a chance for Mason to prove he’s still an elite defensive coordinator, it’s an opportunity for him to rebuild his stock as a potential head coach.

Since the Tigers should have Mason on board for the 2021 season, the focus now shifts over to their opening at offensive coordinator. Harsin is reportedly targeting South Carolina’s Mike Bobo for the job.
