Former Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst arrested on domestic violence charge

Former Texas Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst allegedly chased his girlfriend around a hotel patio, trying to grab a laptop, until she fell and hit her head on a concrete bench.

Dewhurst, 75, was arrested Tuesday evening and charged with misdemeanor family violence, then released on bail early Wednesday morning, according to WFAA.

The victim, identified only as a 41-year old woman who said she had been dating Dewhurst for about two years, told police that she had been assaulted by a man later identified as the Republican politician.

Dewhurst was boarding a bus outside the DoubleTree Hilton Hotel near Dallas Love Field when the woman realized she had their shared laptop, she told police, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by WFAA.

Video footage corroborated her story and showed Dewhurst chasing her around the patio while she was still holding the computer. He then allegedly shoved her away, causing her to hit her head on the bench.

Dewhurst grabbed the computer and walked away, but the woman got up and chased after him, according to the affidavit. Video again shows him push her head down, bending her over and out of the way.

Police took both to police headquarters, where Dewhurst was charged. He was released around 4:15 a.m. Wednesday on a $1,000 bond.

Dewhurst served under Gov. Rick Perry from 2003 to 2015 before losing to Dan Patrick in the 2014 Republic primary.
