Former New Orleans Saints defensive end Glenn Foster Jr. died in Alabama earlier this week. He passed away just after he was taken into police custody.

He was 31 years old.

Foster died on Monday according to a statement from an official at the Pickens County Medical Examiner & Coroner’s Office, obtained by Nola.com. The official wouldn’t comment on Foster’s cause of death or location of death due to the ongoing nature of the investigation.

Foster was being held in the Pickens County jail the day before his death. There was no indication of his release before his passing.

Pickens County jail records show that Foster was booked on counts of reckless endangerment, resisting arrest and attempting to elude police early Saturday morning. He was then rebooked on counts of simple assault and robbery on Sunday.

Foster joined the Saints as an undrafted rookie out of Illinois in 2013. Through 12 games in his rookie season, the New Orleans pass rusher logged 3.0 sacks and six QB hits. Injured after just five games in 2014, he missed the remainder of his second NFL season before he was ultimately cut in 2015.

Several of Foster’s friends and former teammates have responded to his passing on Twitter.

The Foster family is preparing a statement, per Nola.com.
