Former OU football WR Gavin Freeman commits to join Oklahoma State via transfer portal

STILLWATER — An OU legacy has crossed Bedlam battle lines.

Former Sooner receiver Gavin Freeman announced his commitment to Oklahoma State on social media Sunday morning, just a few days after entering the transfer portal.

Freeman’s father, Jason, was a tight end at OU from 1995-98.

While some notable OSU players have been in the limelight for changing sides in Bedlam — in particular, this weekend with former OSU softball star Kelly Maxwell pitching against her old team as a Sooner — Freeman is the most significant transfer to leave OU for OSU in the transfer portal era.

The 5-foot-8, 189-pound Freeman joined the Sooners as a walk-on out of Heritage Hall in 2022, earning a scholarship a year later. He has three years to use his final two seasons of eligibility.

Freeman scored a touchdown the first time he touched the ball as a Sooner, going 46 yards on a reverse against UTEP in 2022. He scored on his first career punt return attempt, an 82-yarder against Arkansas State last year.

While the Cowboys have standout super-senior Brennan Presley in the slot receiver position this year, Freeman could quickly work his way up the depth chart to get into the rotation. And he could also give Presley a rest in the return game.

Freeman appeared in all 13 games over the past two seasons, catching 22 passes for 141 yards and rushing for 91 yards on 12 attempts. He also had 122 yards on 18 punt returns. He had three total touchdowns, one receiving, one rushing and one via punt return.
