Former Olympic Figure Skater Alexandra Paul Killed in Crash at 31

Alexandra Paul, a former Canadian Olympic figure skater, has died.

She was tragically killed in a car accident in Ontario earlier this week, per AP News. The athlete was 31.

Police state that Paul was in one of the cars hit by a truck as it entered a construction zone. The truck reportedly plowed into several stopped vehicles causing damage.

Fox reports that three others were also injured, however, no charges have been brought against the driver of the truck yet.

"It is with a heavy heart that Skate Canada announces the sudden passing of a cherished member of our skating community, Alexandra Paul," Skate Canada wrote in a heartbreaking statement on Friday, shortly after her death.

In the social media post, she was remembered as "a shining star on and off the ice," adding, "Alexandra's dedication, passion, and remarkable talents have left an indelible mark on the world of figure skating."

Paul was in the vehicle with her infant son, and though she reportedly died at the scene, her baby was transported to a local children's hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Paul and her husband, Mitchell Islam, represented Canada at the 2014 Sochi Games and won multiple international medals together. They began dating in 2011 and wed in 2021, welcoming their first child just last year in 2022.

Paul—who also took home silver at the World Junior Figure Skating Championships in 2010—retired from competitive skating in 2016.

"As we remember Alexandra's contributions to the sport, we also reflect on the camaraderie and sportsmanship she exemplified," Skate Canada added, "She was not only an accomplished athlete but also a true role model for aspiring skaters, demonstrating the values of resilience, perseverance and sportsmanlike conduct.

Our hearts go out to Mitch, their son, and their families during this difficult time.
