Former North Quincy basketball star wins one of the nation's top basketball awards

On Thursday, Gatorade announced that Quincy's Orlagh Gormley has been named the 2023-24 Gatorade Massachusetts Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

The 5-6 senior started her high school career at North Quincy High before transferring to Dexter Southfield in Brookline. Gormley is the first player in school history to win the award. Gormley stuffed the stat sheet averaging 22.1 points, 9.2 rebounds, 7.1 assists and 4.8 steals per game while shooting 65% during her senior season.

"The award, which celebrates the nation’s top high school athletes for excellence on the court, in the classroomand in the community, distinguishes Gormley as Massachusetts’ best high school girls basketball player," read the release.

Gormley made the most of her short two-year career at North. During her sophomore season in 2021-22, the Raiders won their first 24 games before falling in the MIAA Division 2 quarterfinals. She averaged 27.7 points, 8.7 rebounds and 6 assists per game. She broke the city single-game scoring record (boys or girls, Quincy or North) by dropping 56 points on Masconomet Regional in a tournament win.

Gormley continues a recent string of South Shore players bringing home the award. Norwell's and Noble & Greenough's Grace Oliver (she'll head to Colorado next season) won the award last season. Milton's Caroline Ducharme, also a Nobles grad, won the award twice (2019-2020, 2020-2021). Ducharme currently plays at UConn.

Gormley, who boasts a 3.62 weighted GPA, will continue her career at Providence College next season. Her older sister, Aiobhe, is wrapping up her freshman season at Boston University. The Terriers (19-11) play in the Patriot League semifinals tonight (Thursday) at 6 p.m. against Colgate.
