The Sports world is mourning one of its own.

On Monday, Dec. 18, the family of former NBA star Eric Montross confirmed that he passed away on Sunday while surrounded by his loved ones. Per the announcement, which was shared with Montross' alma mater, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the 7-foot basketball star passed away following a battle with cancer—which he was diagnosed with in March 2023.

"His family is grateful for the tremendous support and the truly overwhelming love expressed by so many people," the update noted, "as he battled with his signature determination and grace."

The announcement highlighted one request from Montross' loved ones: "Privacy during this difficult period."

Additionally, UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz shared in his own statement, writing, "I am deeply saddened by the loss of my good friend and Tar Heel legend Eric Montross. He was an incredible friend, a passionate leader and an inspiring advocate for our campus. His impact extended well beyond the court with his tireless support of the UNC Children's Hospital and his annual Father's Day basketball camp. We have lost a great Tar Heel, and Eric will be truly missed. Please keep Laura, Sarah, Andrew and Megan in your thoughts and prayers."

Montross was best known for being a first-round draft pick for the Boston Celtics. The team noted in a statement on X (formerly Twitter), "RIP Eric Montross.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the Montross family."

He went on to play nine seasons in the NBA, playing for the Dallas Mavericks, Toronto Raptors and Philadelphia 76ers, among others.
