Local Sports: Monroe, Bedford post strong showings in Indoor meet

WILLIS – Indoors was a good place to be Thursday.

Monroe and Bedford opened their track and field seasons in the Southeastern Conference Indoor Meet at Ypsilanti Lincoln.

Monroe’s Teegan Simmons showed off his varied skills, taking second in the shot-put, third in the 200 meters and fourth in the 400.

His teammate Andrew Foshag was second in the 3,200 meters and third in the 1,600.

The Trojans also got fourths from Delmar Clay (shot-put), Deshun Richardson (200) and the 1,600 relay of Simmons, Foshag, Richardson, and Chris Stein).

Bedford’s Sawyer Ulery was second in both hurdle races and the Mules also were runners-up in the 3,200 (Maddi Duke, Cameron Varner, Logan Thomas, Jack Durivage) and 1,600 (Owen Przybylski, Duke, Alex Mapes, Durivage) relays.

Mapes was third in the low hurdles and Durivage fourth in the 800. Fifths came from Mason Shultz, Jacob Spoonmore and Owen Przybylski.

In the girls meet, Monroe’s Kazhier Burns (low hurdles) and Adelle Robinson (200) of Bedford took thirds.

Flat Rock swept

PLYMOUTH – Flat Rock opened its season with a chilly 10-1, 11-1 doubleheader loss against Plymouth Thursday night.

Alex Dropiewski, Sawyer Scott, Evan Szalay and Logan Coplen had the only hits for the Rams.

Ex-Carlson coach makes NCAA

GIBRALTAR – Former Gibraltar Carlson girls basketball coach Blake DuDonis has made the NCAA Tournament.

He is an assistant coach for the Fairfield women’s team, which plays at Indiana Saturday. The Connecticut school, champion of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, currently boasts a 31-1 record and is ranked No. 25 in the country.

His wife, Carly Thibault-DuDonis, is the head coach.

DuDonis went 5-16 in his only season at Carlson – 2016. He left when his wife got a job at Mississippi State.

This is his second year at Fairfield following a three year stint as head coach at Wisconsin-River Falls.

He helped River Falls break the school record with 206 3-pointers in 2021-22. He was 19-40 there, including 12-13 in his final season.

Before coming to Carlson, he served as an assistant coach at the University of Buffalo, Gardner-Webb in North Carolina and Merrimack College in Massachusetts.

Airport tops Dundee

CARLETON – Payton Toth scored four goals and Olivia Bucki added three as Airport opened its season with an 8-0 victory over Dundee Wednesday.

Lena Lozon-Bogedain added a goal and an assist and Marlie Liggett had an assist. Madilynn Daniels and Marissa Chapdelaine split the shutout in goal.

PREP BOWLING

Five from Huron first team

NEW BOSTON – League champion New Boston Huron put three boys and two girls on the All-Huron League first team.

Brad Huges, Hunter Wyszynski and Nick Suemnick made it for the boys and Olivia Demick and Veronica Richardson for the girls.

Also on the first team for the boys were Clark Friese and Max Jenness of Milan, Brayden Siders and Colin Peterson of Airport, Isaiah Knott of Jefferson and Maverick Markham of Riverview.

Second-team honors went to Brady Runyon of St. Mary Catholic Central, Dylan Aikey of Airport, Isaac Arredondo of Flat Rock, Jay Hickey of Dundee, Jem Carpenter of Milan and Kaden Luff of Flat Rock.

Anson Chidester, Tyler Marovino, Jaidyn Fital and Logan McClaran of Milan, Wess Barton and Ian Freeman of Airport.

Daven King and Gabriel Cadle of Jefferson, Brandon Brown of Flat Rock and Zach McCormick of Huron received honorable mention.

Rounding out the girls first team were Maggie Smith and Rachel Peladeau of Milan, Abagale Johnson of SMCC, Abby Hill of Airport, Abigail DeBruyne of Dundee, Bella Thomas of Flat Rock and Hailey Harder of Jefferson.

Addison Dolencic and Maria Williams of Huron, Char Schultz and Madison Nichols of Airport, Gabby Dryden of Milan, Camryn Clish of Flat Rock and Brook Hester of Dundee made the second team.

Honorable mention selections were Ally Jones, Elli Haney and Gwen Jones of Milan, Diane Percha and Lexiz Santana of Flat Rock, Kiernan Brown of Dundee and Mariah Hamel of Airport.

PREP WRESTLING

Dundee dominates

BLISSFIELD – Mason Katschor (106), Haydn Nutt (113), Wyatt Burns (126), Cameron Chinavare (132), Jeremy Amrhein (138), Blake Cosby (144), Donny Beaufait (150, Kole Katschor (165) and Rocco Redmon (175) of Dundee all earned spots on the first team for All-Lenawee County Athletic Association.

Mason Haines (120) and Owen Motylinski (190) were second team.

Chris Galloway of Ida (285) received honorable mention.
