Former bookkeeper at Meadowood Golf & Tennis Club accused in $290,000 embezzlement case

ST. LUCIE COUNTY — The former accountant and bookkeeper at Meadowood Golf & Tennis Club was arrested after accusations of stealing about $290,000 from the business over a number of years, according to recently-released records.

Rose Claudine Long, 46, of Port St. Lucie, was booked in Tuesday at the St. Lucie County Jail on 34 counts of uttering a forged instrument and a single first-degree grand theft charge following an investigation by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office. She was released Wednesday on $420,000 bond, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Meadowood Golf & Tennis Club is east of Interstate 95 and north of West Angle Road.

The case appeared to begin in March 2023 when the director of operations at the business reported a theft. The director of operations reported the business decided to reorganize, and they terminated Long, an employee of many years. Long’s official position was manager of accounting and administration.

The director of operations took over Long’s duties and reported noticing Long “has been using the Meadowood bank account with South State Bank (previously CenterState Bank) to make payments on her personal Capital One account,” records state.

He also reported Long was changing bank statements “to cover the theft and she altered the expenses in their books.”

Investigators determined the unauthorized transactions started in June 2019. Ninety eight unauthorized charges were made on a Meadowood account to Capital One totaling more than $288,000. More than $2,000 for Affirm.com payments also were made.

Transactions on Long’s credit cards included orthodontic charges, hospital and medical charges, hotel payments and car trips/rentals, clothing and shoes stores, vehicle payments, jewelry and beauty stores, and other things, records state.

Investigators found “34 edited documents provided to hide Rose’s unauthorized transactions.”

A defense attorney for Long was not known Wednesday.
