Former 49ers RB Frank Gore to make pro boxing debut in May

Frank Gore is ready to officially get his boxing career started.

The former San Francisco 49ers star and one of the best running backs in NFL history is going to make his professional boxing debut next month, according to MMA Fighting.

The fight will take place in Jackson, Mississippi, on May 14 as part of Jorge Masvidal’s Gamebred Promotions, though it’s still unknown who Gore will fight.

Gore fought in an exhibition boxing match late last year ahead of Jake Paul’s rematch with Tyron Woodley. He fell to longtime NBA guard Deron Williams via split decision. He took part in that bout despite a “questionable brain MRI” that he was required to take before the fight, which revealed multiple white spots, though he said he passed.

Gore announced on Sunday that he plans to sign a one-day contract with the 49ers to officially retire with the franchise in the near future. Gore is the league’s third-leading rusher with 16,000 career yards, which trails only Walter Payton and Emmitt Smith. He finished with 100 total touchdowns, had nine 1,000-yard seasons and played in 241 NFL games — which is more than anyone in league history.

Gore also said that he hopes to join the 49ers front office.

Though it’s unclear where his boxing career will go, the 38-year-old is ready to give it a real shot after last year’s exhibition.
