Forget the Dollar Menu: Fast food prices double inflation rate in 10 years

Remember when fast-food chains offered $1 menus.

FinanceBuzz.com the personal finance website remembers to. In their recent study Is Fast Food Affordable Anymore?, compared today's popular fast-food menu items prices versus what the cost was 10 years ago.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, starting in 2014 the cost of goods increased 31% on the dollar, as inflation rose 22% since 2019. The report also says from 2014 to 2024, the average menu prices for fast-food increased between 39% and 100%.

The data suggest the hike in menu prices are due to inflation.

Fast food chains that include McDonalds, Taco Bell, Popeyes and Chipotle prices raised more than double the actual inflation rate.

Here are the findings from notables menu items according to the report:

McDonalds

The ever so popular McChicken sandwich price increase 200% in a single decade. In 2014, the items was featured on the $1 menu and now it costs $3 at some locations.

Taco Bell

The Beefy 5-Layer Burrito price increased 132%. The average cost in 2014 was $1.59 but now the present-day price is $3.69.

Popeye's

In 2014 a 4 piece Chicken Dinner cost $6.99, but now the meal price increased 97% and now costs $13.79.

Chipotle

In 2014 customers could purchase a burrito, bowl, or tacos, for less than $6.75 but now those same menu items cost increased 75% and cost more than $10.50.
