Football scoreboard: Peach County takes down Mary Persons, Upson-Lee upsets Jackson

Pink armbands and pompoms dotted the field at Trojan Stadium for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but it was a battle of black and gold as Peach County took down the Mary Persons Bulldogs 35-18 Friday night.

Trojans quarterback Colter Ginn had an efficient game passing and finished 13 of 16 passing with 163 yards and five touchdown passes to lead his squad to a big region win.

“He played probably his best mental game tonight,” said Peach County head coach Chad Campbell. “That started with us being able to run the ball.”

The Trojans leaned on the running back tandem of Chris McMillian and Robert Jones to help move the ball.

Their defense played the ultimate bend-but-don’t-break game, giving up some big runs to star Bulldogs back Duke Watson but containing him just enough to get the win.

“We still can’t get lined up on defense,” Campbell said. “We do it right all week, and then we line up wrong on Friday… we have a lot to work on.”

Peach County came into the contest with a 3-3 record after losing a low-scoring showdown against Carver and improves to 4-3. The lost was the third straight defeat for Mary Persons, who fall to 4-4 on the year.

Peach County will face Upson-Lee next week.

“We have to put our big boy pants on and play some football,” Campbell said. “We had one play in the first quarter last year… they will run it down your throat.”

The Trojans controlled the game in the first half, dominating time of possession. Ginn was efficient when it mattered, going a perfect 7 of 7 passing for 89 yards and three touchdowns.

Watson helped Mary Persons stay afloat on offense with 94 rush yards and a score in the first half, but it was the only touchdown they could muster. Peach County led 21-10 at the half.

The Trojans maintained the strong passing game in the third quarter, with Ginn throwing for another touchdown to go up 28-10.

The Bulldogs made an effort to comeback, with Watson helping carry them to another touchdown. A two-point conversion made it a 10-point game early in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough.

A late Peach County touchdown made the final score 35-18.
