The National's Ugly Burger

Burger

  • 8 Ounce ground beef patty (preferably chuck, brisket, short rib blend)
  • 1 thinly sliced tomato
  • 2 leaves of Bibb lettuce
  • 1 slice of pickled red onion (see recipe below)
  • 5 pieces pickled jalapeño (see recipe below)
  • 5 pieces pickled Kirby cucumber (see recipe below)
  • 1 slice Gruyère cheese
  • 1 Tbsp NTL Burger Sauce (see recipe below)
  • 1 onion roll bun, sliced in half
  1. On a grill or hot sauté pan cook the patty until desired temperature (preferably Medium Rare), and place slice cheese on the top of the patty until it melts.
  2. To assemble the burger: Toast the bun and place one piece of lettuce on the bottom of the bun and the top of the bun.  Next place the burger on the bottom followed by all the pickles, the sauce, the tomato and the top of the bun.

Burger Sauce

  • 2 cup ketchup
  • 1 cup Japanese mayonnaise
  • 0.5 cup barbecue sauce
  • 0.5 cup A.1. original steak sauce
  • 0.125 cup Dijon mustard
  1. Combine all ingredients and mix with a whisk until well incorporated.

Pickled Red Onion

  • 0.125 cup salt
  • 2 star anise
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 red onions sliced thinly
  • 0.5 cup sugar
  • 2 cup red wine vinegar
  1. Mix vinegar, salt, sugar, star anise and cinnamon and bring to a boil.
  2. Once the pickling liquid is boiling, pour the liquid over onions and cover.
  3. The pickled onions are ready once the onions are cooled.

Pickled Jalapenos

  • 2 cup rice wine vinegar
  • 1.25 cup sugar
  • jalapeño peppers
  1. Mix vinegar, salt and sugar together in a pot and boil.
  2. Once liquid is boiling, pour over jalapenos and cover.
  3. Once jalapenos have cooled, they are ready for use.

  • 1 cup distilled white vinegar
  • 0.5 cup sugar
  • 0.125 cup salt
  • 2 Tbsp ground turmeric
  • 1 Tbsp coriander seed
  • 5 Kirby cucumbers sliced thinly
