A sweet treat is sometimes a guilty pleasure, but are you really addicted? We all have our trigger foods. Those eats that once we start nibbling on, we just can't stop.
A new study out of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is addressing these types of food triggers in humans. Study participants were asked to identify foods that made them eat to discomfort or made them feel tired after eating.
The top offenders? Loaded with dairy and fat, ice cream was number 5 on the list. Childhood comfort food cookies proved to be just as comforting to adults. Chips were rated the third most addictive food, and the study found that chocolate can trigger addictive tendencies, despite being rich in antioxidants. Topping the list is pizza, an easy go-to meal for college kids and busy families alike.
Nicole Avena, assistant professor of pharmacology and systems therapeutics at Mount Sinai's Icahn School of Medicine, told the Daily News that there is a "biological basis" for food addiction, and that it can be beaten.
All the foods on this list are highly processed and loaded with extra fats and sugars. The study also points out that grapes are relatively harmless, but once processed into wine, the abuse potential increases. And the least addictive food? Cucumbers, which sounds about right.
