A new study in the online journal Flavourprovides evidence that what we use to eat food may change the way we perceive the food's taste.
Participants thought yogurt was denser and more expensive when they ate it from a lighter plastic spoon. As Gizmodo reported, "eating with a heavy spoon made yogurt seem cheaper, less dense, and generally less likeable—but also sweeter."
The size of the cutlery didn't have a large effect on taste.
The color of the cutlery did affect taste. Blue spoons made yogurt taste saltier, while white spoons made it taste sweeter. Researchers did note that "these effects depended on the color of the food as well, suggesting that color contrast may have been responsible for the observed effects."
Foods tasted saltier when eaten with a knife than with a fork or spoon.
The researchers note that eating food is "a multisensory experience involving taste, feel of the food in our mouths, aroma, and the feasting of our eyes. Even before we put food into our mouths our brains have made a judgment about it, which affects our overall experience. Subtly changing eating implements and tableware can affect how pleasurable, or filling, food appears."
