Have you ever tossed out food because it had passed its sell-by date?

As it turns out, the expiration dates should be viewed as guidelines. Obviously, using your best judgment is key to determining whether something is fit to eat, but the sell-by dates are mostly meant to help grocers determine which foods should be sold first. The USDA says that foods can be kept longer than their expiration dates as long as they are stored properly.

It is true that hard, moldy cheese can be revived by cutting off the bad bits and canned goods can last up to a year.
