Are Microwaves Toast?

Updated

Sales of microwaves in the U.S. have been flat or falling every year for nearly a decade, reports news outlet Quartz, spurring industry analysts to speculate that the appliance's days may be numbered.

Long considered an essential appliance for the kitchen, the microwave is found in more than 90 percent of U.S. households. Experts say that the drop in sales may be due in part to a shift in public attitude toward healthy eating habits and competition from other countertop appliances, like the toaster oven which has seen an 80 percent growth in sales since 2000.
