Learn How to Make The Original Piña Colada

In the hot summer months, it's important to have a great cocktail recipe to fall back on. The piña colada happens to be refreshing and perfect for parties. Meaning "strained pineapple" in Spanish, the piña colada was invented in 1954 by Ramon "Monchito" Mattero, a bartender who was working at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan, Puerto Rico. His mission with the beloved cocktail was to pour the flavors of Puerto Rico into a glass. The piña colada took him three months of experimenting to create. Monchito's hard work paid off. Now, the piña colada is the official drink of Puerto Rico!

How to Make a Piña Colada

Monchito's original recipe for the piña colada calls for light rum, coconut cream, heavy cream, fresh pineapple juice and crushed ice. You can't get more authentic than the recipe from the chef himself! This drink is so popular, that it even inspired a hit Rupert Holmes song "(Escape) The Piña Colada Song."

Non-Alcoholic Piña Colada

Since the sweet piña colada can be deceptively strong, it's easy to make a non-alcoholic piña colada. Forget about the rum, and instead just blend pineapple, cream of coconut and ice together for a delicious non-alcohoic beverage. The beauty of the piña colada is that it is endlessly versatile. Try adding banana for a tasty alternative version to the original or even try making a piña colada smoothie with coconut milk. Either way, you should be sure to serve the drink with a tiny umbrella while outdoors!
