Foe, a brand new film from Lion director Garth Davis, has set some unwanted records for its two lead stars, Paul Mescal and Saoirse Ronan.

Mescal and Ronan play a married couple whose lives are turned upside down when a complete stranger tells the husband he is being sent to a space station. The stranger also says that the wife will be left with a robot for company.

However, while that sci-fi premise may sound intriguing, the movie, which is currently playing at the BFI London Film Festival, is the lowest-rated movie for Mescal according to Rotten Tomatoes. The film has a score of just 14%.

Previously, Mescal's lowest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes was Carmen, which scored 61%. Conversely, his highest-rated movie is All of Us Strangers, which sits on 98% and is also playing at the London Film Festival. That picture co-stars Andrew Scott.

Meanwhile, Foe is Ronan's third lowest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes. Justin and the Knights of Valor is second lowest with 13% and Host is rock bottom with 10%. Ronan's highest-rated film is Lady Bird, which sits on an impressive 99%.

However, it is still very much exciting times for the two young actors, particularly Mescal, who was earlier this year cast in Gladiator 2. Director Ridley Scott recently opened up about why he chose to cast Mescal in the lead role.

"Can I see Paul Mescal being as big as Russell Crowe? For sure. I watched Normal People. It's not my kind of show but I saw four episodes in a row – boom, boom, boom.

"I was thinking, 'Who the hell is this Paul Mescal?' And then I watched the whole series. And then, suddenly, Gladiator 2 came up, because the script was working pretty well. And I kept thinking about Paul. And that was it."

Foe will be released in selected cinemas on October 20; a streaming date on Prime Video is yet to be announced.
