Florida Christian basketball wins in OT. Plus Cypress Bay, Gibbons, Seahorse wrestling and more

Sophomore Ryan Rangel, who went 4-of-8 from 3-point range, made a clutch three to force overtime en route to Florida Christian’s boys’ basketball win over Miami Christian 69-65.

Alex Soto, a junior, had a team-high 22 points to help the Patriots in their first victory of the season.

In girls’ basketball, Norland won a close one against Lourdes 56-54 also in overtime.

Wrestling

Cypress Bay placed third to open the wrestling tournament season at the H-Town Throwdown in Hialeah.

Andrew Punzalan at 106, Jordan Escarra at 120, Zach Weidler at 182, and Gozie Mosi at 285 won championships in their respective weight division.

Gabe Herrero was a runner-up at 126. Gyanni Mosi was fifth at 195, and Julio Gonzalez sixth at 120.

The Lightning’s tradition of wrestling success continues under the direction of Coach Allen Held.

Prior, to ready for the start of the high school wrestling season, the 48th annual Seahorse Open occurred at Cypress Bay High School in Weston. Coach Held had pro wrestling style title belts made for the winners, like Somerset’s Matthew Velasco pictured with Coach Joe Blasucci.

The Cardinal Gibbons wrestling team, through the coaching of the Morris twins, went 5-0 at its Chief Duals.

Cardinal Gibbons defeated Flanagan 59-24, Miramar 78-6, South Plantation 54-18, Fort Lauderdale 66-22 and Coral Springs Charter 57-15.

Golf

Mike Carlin of American Heritage-Plantation was named the Class 2A Girls’ Golf Coach of the Year by the Florida Dairy Farmers. The Patriots won their third consecutive state title in girls’ golf.

The Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Awards program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers’ commitment to the state’s youth.

This marks the 31st year of these unique awards as it honors the state’s top athletes and coaches in all 30 FHSAA sanctioned and recognized sports. The program also emphasizes to young people the importance of keeping dairy products a primary part of their diet in their overall nutrition plan.
