The Basketball Tournament’s eighth annual tournament starts this week.

WoCo Showtime, a team that includes several Wofford alumni, is one of the 64 teams in the winner-take-all field that will be competing for a grand prize of $1 million.

Alumni teams have dominated the TBT Tournament in its recent history and will do so again this year. Of this year’s field, 30 are classified as alumni teams. WoCo Showtime was created from a merger of Wofford players and team from last year called Showtime.

Fans can expect to see Terrier legends Fletcher Magee, Cam Jackson and Storm Murphy on the WoCo Showtime roster.

WoCo Showtime head coach and former Terrier point guard Bobby Perez described the roster as one out of a “parallel universe,” adding that it’s a group of guys you’d never expect to see play with each other at the same time.

“It’s just kind of really cool to see the generations of Wofford basketball players all be on one super Wofford team together,” Perez said.

Magee said the opportunity to play with former teammates and rekindle “old friendships” was something that he enjoys most about the TBT Tournament.

“Last year Eric Garcia was the point guard, so it was good to play with him again. I hadn’t played with him since my sophomore year,” Magee said. “I never got to play with Lee Skinner. He left before I got there, so it was cool to get to play with him. And then this year, I think we have Storm (Murphy) … it’s just really cool to get to be around those guys.”

Magee was a mainstay of the Wofford men’s basketball team from 2015 to 2019. During his time with the Terriers, Magee shot 42% from beyond the arc and averaged just over 18 points per game.

His three-point shooting was not only impressive — it was historic. Magee made 509 three-pointers during his collegiate career, putting him at the top of the NCAA record book for most three-pointers made.

After being unable to play with the team last year, Magee’s teammate Cam Jackson jumped at the opportunity to play for WoCo Showtime this time around.

“As far as being able to put any jersey with Wofford on it again, I will run at the opportunity to do that,” Jackson said. “Just so many sweet memories from playing at that school and with playing with those guys, so I’m always excited at a chance to just get out there and fight with guys that I’ve fought with before.”

Jackson played at Wofford from 2014 to 2019, starting in 94 of the 99 games he played and averaging 14.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game during his senior year. He most recently played overseas in Italy.

Last year the No. 15 seeded WoCo Showtime team fell three points short of a major first-round upset, losing to No. 2 seed Best Virginia, a West Virginia alumni team, 70-67.

This year WoCo Showtime will be back in the West Virginia Regional, this time as a No. 3 seed, and will face the Auburn alumni team No. 6 War Ready.

The game will take place on July 24 and will be televised on ESPN3. If WoCo Showtime makes a run to the championship game of the tournament, it will be televised on ESPN on Aug. 2.

As for what they’ll do with their share of the million-dollar purse, Magee said he’ll be buying Bitcoin. As for the newly-wed Jackson, he said he’d use some of his share of the prize on Bitcoin but will join Perez in saving up for a house.
