Today, the series unveiled the first full-length trailer for season 2, with the promise of romantic tension, tons of swashbuckling action, and, of course, an unbeatable soundtrack. Watch the new trailer below:

The historically-inspired comedy, which stars Rhys Darby as Stede Bonnet and Taika Waititi as Edward Teach AKA Blackbeard, became a massive, word-of-mouth hit on the streaming service after its debut in 2022. Responding to the off-beat sense of humor, diverse cast, and the queer romance at its core, fans quickly began agitating for more. The hashtag #RenewOurFlagMeansDeath trended worldwide consistently over the weeks following the show's finale, and it topped the list of most watched new streaming shows for seven consecutive weeks according to data compiled by Parrot Analytics.

However, news about the show's renewal was initially slow to come, giving rise to speculation that it could be dropped by the service, but in June 2022 the network finally confirmed it would be returning for season 2.

"Season 2 is officially setting sail" the official HBO Max Twitter account shared.

"We felt the show was special while we were making it, but fans' open-armed embrace of the inhabitants of the Revenge makes heading into a second season all the more sweet," said the show's creator, David Jenkins. "Thanks to our team at HBO Max, our invested executive producers, and our wildly enthusiastic audience for making another voyage to this world possible."

Here's everything we know so far about what's ahead for season 2.

Most of the core cast is returning

Along with stars Rhys Darby and Taika Waititi, most of the Revenge crew have been confirmed to return, including Con O'Neill (Izzy), Vico Ortiz (Jim), Kristian Nairn (Wee John), Joel Fry (Frenchie), Matthew Maher (Black Pete), Samson Kayo (Oluwande), Ewen Bremner (Nathaniel Buttons), Samba Schutte (Roach), and Leslie Jones (Spanish Jackie).

Some new face will also reportedly be joining the show, including Ruibo Qian, Madeleine Sami, and Anapela Polataivao. Minnie Driver will guest star as the famed pirate Anne Bonny.

What will season 2 be about?

While details remain scant, in an August 2023 interview with Vanity Fair (the interviews were conducted prior to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes) the cast and crew did offer a few hints of what's ahead in the new season.

"I don’t think [show creator] David Jenkins is ever going to follow an expected route. I’d hate to drive in a car with him." O’Neill shared, "I think [fans are] going to appreciate what [Jenkins] wants. Season two does stick to the original premise that we created in season one, which is take it on to other levels.’"

As for his character, the surly right-hand man of Waititi's Blackbeard. "Physically it’s been quite demanding," O’Neill said, "And also emotionally it’s been quite demanding to be playing a man enraged by unrequited love, who’s basically a hopeless romantic, and to be able to play all that and also remember that this is fundamentally a comedy.’" He added, "What I love about this show is it does allow itself to swing between the two. We’re almost operatic in our darkness at times, and then we swing back to the sweetness of the simplicity of the love of our two guys. It’s been challenging just to get the tone right."

The season is "going to be unexpected and surprising, but also very pleasurable and satisfying for those who like the show," said executive producer Garrett Basch.

Season 2 filmed in New Zealand.

Shortly after the renewal was announced, Waititi (who also serves as executive producer for the show in addition to his starring role) revealed that the show will be headed to New Zealand for its second outing

"We start filming hopefully I think by October, and we’re gonna shoot in New Zealand," he told Collider in 2022. "We shot the last one in LA. Weird place to try and do something all on the ocean, so we’re gonna go down to New Zealand which is surrounded by it. That’s one of the things I’m most excited about for the next year."

Considering that Waititi and his co-star Darby, as well as David Fane, who plays Blackbeard's henchman Fang on the series, are all from New Zealand originally, and all use their own accents on the show, the move seems like a natural one for season 2.

In late July 2022, showrunner David Jenkins shared a redacted photo of the title page for season 2's first episode (with the title hidden) with the news that the script for the first episode was complete. Jenkins's tweet also included the hashtag #justiceforluciusrip—a nod to the apparent murder of Nathan Foad's character, Lucius, at the end of the first season. Since the season came to a close, fans have speculated that the beloved character might have somehow trickily survived being thrown overboard, but thus far nothing has been officially confirmed.

Later, that December, actor Samba Schutte, who plays the ship's cook Roach on the series, shared a post announcing that filming had wrapped on the second season.
