Five Guys serves up final burgers and fries at White Oaks Mall location

Five Guys Burgers and Fries has left White Oaks Mall, marking the end of 10 years in business at the location.

A spokesman for the Virginia-based burger chain said that the store closed up shop on Nov. 26, leaving empty the space formerly occupied by Kerasotes Theatres which closed in 2008.

Five Guys first opened in 2013, allowing patrons to customize their burgers with a range of toppings. The menu was a simple one, with burgers, fries, hot dogs, milkshakes, and drinks.

Representatives from White Oaks Mall did not respond to requests for comment.

Ward 7 Alderman Brad Carlson, who represents the mall on the Springfield City Council, said that he wasn't aware of the reasoning behind the closure, but he did point out that with the arrival of the Malibu Jack's indoor theme park and with the continuing construction of the new Illinois Environmental Protection Agency headquarters at the mall, there's an opportunity there if someone is willing.

"I look at it as an opportunity for someone to come in and open up another restaurant," Carlson said. "You just have to look at Malibu Jack's, which just opened up and as we know, IEPA is moving into the Sears building sometime next summer or late fall. That's going to have somewhere up to 500 people. It's unfortunate that it couldn't hang around for a little bit longer, but I'm a glass half-full kind of guy and I think someone can come in there and be successful."

The chain has 40 locations across Illinois after the closure at White Oaks, with the closest being in Normal, about 70 minutes to the north of Springfield.
