Fisher Catholic quiz team to compete for national title this weekend in Chicago

LANCASTER − The Fisher Catholic quiz bowl team will compete in the National Academic Quiz Tournaments' Small School National Championship Tournament on Saturday and Sunday in Chicago after recently competing in the Gahanna Invitational.

The Irish team consists of junior Colin Michaelis, sophomore Brody Imes, freshman Eve Ohwofahworaye, junior Luke Ohwofahworaye, and senior Claire Sickafoose and will compete in the open division. Sickafoose is the team captain.

Lynn Stevenson is the coach and Michael Sedlack is the assistant coach.

"It's very exciting for our kids because we get to go to Chicago," Stevenson said. "We feel very fortunate that we qualified for it. The schools come from all over the country. We're talking probably 100 high schools will be there. They're (students) are very enthusiastic and excited."

This marks the third time the school has reached the championship tournament. It appeared last year and finished with a 3-7 record.

Students must be well versed in numerous subjects as the questions come in categories like American history, physics, math concepts, astronomy and more.

"And our kids' favorite category, which is trash," Stevenson said. "Which is all about pop stars, some of the games they play on these little gaming devices. Just all sorts of things that are fun for kids but not something you would have in school."

Tournament results will be updated throughout the contest at http://www.naqt.com/go/stats/14701.
