First, a world championship. Now, Rangers baseball fans are getting a Whataburger
The World Champion Texas Rangers will offer fans Texas’ favorite cheeseburgers this season, adding a Whataburger concession stand inside Globe Life Field.
The San Antonio-based burger chain applied for a state permit for $250,000 in construction, according to records published by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
The stand will be finished by March 28, according to the permit application. That night, the Rangers open the regular season against the Chicago Cubs.
The new location was first reported by The Dallas Morning News. The News described the stand as on the stadium’s third-base side.
A Rangers official said the team was not ready to announce the food lineup yet. The team will have information in mid-March, he said.
Last season, Buffalo-based Delaware North, the Rangers’ concessionaire, operated two stands named “Backstop Burgers.”
The new burger stand will deliver some competition for Hurtado Barbecue, the Arlington favorite that often drew a line last season from the moment the stadium gates opened.
Hurtado will return to the stadium this season, owner Brandon Hurtado said Monday.
Whataburger was founded in 1950 by the Dobson family in Corpus Christi. It became known for serving burgers on a larger 5-inch bun instead of a 4-inch bun, including double or triple meat-and-cheese burgers.
In 1982, the chain opened its first 24-hour locations serving breakfasts and “taquitos.”
Arlington has seven Whataburger locations, including two about 2 miles from the stadium, 734 Stadium Drive. The closest Whataburgers are at 211 S. Watson Road (Texas 360) and 2214 N. Collins St.
