First winners of Ohio Vax-a-Million lottery announced

The first two winners of Ohio’s Vax-a-Million lottery were announced on Wednesday night and included a woman from the southwestern part of the state and a Dayton-area teen.

The two were initially selected in a Monday drawing to verify their eligibility. They were officially confirmed as the winners after Ohio Lottery’s Cash Explosion TV show.

By the time the lottery program was over, Abbigal Bugenske was the winner of the $1 million prize and Joseph Costello won a full college scholarship.

“We’re excited that this has inspired so many Ohioans to get vaccinated, and we’re thrilled to announce the winners of the first round of drawings,” said Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine.

The coronavirus vaccine incentive managed to amass nearly 3 million registrations to be entered to win the cash prize and over 100,000 teens to sign up for the college scholarship.

The initiative saw immediate success within the first week as Ohio saw a 33% increase in the number of coronavirus vaccines being distributed.
